Fat Shafts Five Time Champs

For the fifth consecutive season, the Fat Shafts have clinched the Regular Season title. After taking four points in their match this evening, they made it impossible to be caught by the Southpaws or the Rolling Stones. Those two teams will still have to determine second and third in the final week. Congrats to the team members, Mark Kennedy, Andy Koetstra, Lyle Williams, Stephen Westlake and Gerry Fox.

The last playoff spot in the “A” Division is still unknown although Grip It N Sip It holds a slim three point lead over the KGB.

The Dubbers and Latecomers are assured to be in the “B” Division while the battle for eighth place between the Whizbangers, Fivesome and CCCP will come down to next Wednesday night. Just four points separate the teams.

Tim Donaldson had the low round of the night shooting a 28. Andy Koetstra posted a 29 and Steve Westlake shot a round of 30.

In the other matches tonight, the Southpaws, KGB and CCCP all took six points. The Rolling Stones and Grip It N Sip It earned four points while two points each went to the Whizbangers, Fivesome and Dubbers.

The closest to the pin winners were the Rolling Stones on hole 8 and Ron Eilens on hole 17. The 50/50 winner was Kim Defosse.

A special reminder to the team captains to please let Steve Powell know by next week, how many players you will have out for the final 18 holes of playoffs and the party on September 9th. Steve needs and accurate head count.

Congratulations to Andy Koetstra  who won the Club Championships last weekend. He and Nick Vangemeren needed a three hole playoff to decide things.

We’re back to the white tees for the final week of the regular season. See you then.

Solid Rounds For Many

Ideal conditions both on the course and weather wise resulted in some much lower scores overall tonight.

Six teams posted sub 100 team totals. Peter Hughes and Andy Koetstra had the low individual rounds shooting one over par 28. Thirteen others shot 32 or better. Good shooting guys.

There was some movement in the standings as the Dubbers moved into fifth place, just four points behind the fourth place KGB. The Latecomers have a slim one point edge on the Fivesome for the potential last spot in the B division come the playoffs. Only six weeks remain in the regular season.

In the nights matches, the Southpaws, Rolling Stones, Fat Shafts and Dubbers all took six points. The Whizbangers earned five points while the Fivesome took four points. The Hackers doubled their season point total by taking two points while one point went to the Wedgers.

The closest to the pin winners were Colin McDonald on hole 3 and Kim Defosse on hole 12. The 50/50 winner was Peter Hughes.

See you next Wednesday on the blue tees.

Tough Night On The Links

After a week off due to the wet weather, a return to the blue tees proved to be a challenge for many once again. Despite the ideal conditions, low scores were hard to come by.

There were no changes to the Individual and Team Low Gross standings. The league standings saw a bit of a shuffle but the Southpaws and Rolling Stones remain perfect at the top after three weeks of play and by taking all six points in their respective matches tonight.

Also taking six points were the Fat Shafts, Dubbers and Fivesome. Grip It N Sip It took five points while one point was earned by the Hackers.

The closest to the pin winners were Steve Westlake on hole #3 and Kim Defosse on hole #12. The 50/50 winner was Don St.Denis.

Back to the white tees next week. See you then.

Blues Were Buggy and Boiling

The sweltering heat and humidity combined with the constant buzzing of bugs made playing from the blue tees extra challenging tonight.

I couldn’t even find time to take any photos or videos tonight as I was either trying to dry off, swing or defend myself.

In the evenings matches, the Dubbers moved up two places into fourth spot after taking four points and leapfrogging the KGB and Grip It N Sip It. The CCCP took two points.

Elsewhere the Fivesome, Whizbangers and Fat Shafts all took six points. In a very tight match the Southpaws earned five points while the Latecomers took one point. The Rolling Stones took four points while Grip It N Sip It finished with two points.

The closest to the pin winners were Jordan Mercer on hole #4 and Gerry Fox on hole #13. The 50/50 winner was Kim Defosse.

We’re back to the white tees next week and hopefully more comfortable temperatures. See you then.

The Standings Shuffle

With just seven weeks of regular season play left before the playoffs, things remain tight and ever changing.

From one week to the next the teams from 3rd to 8th place continue to flip flop spots. With just a nine point spread, these teams continue to battle for playoff positioning.

In tonight’s action, the Fat Shafts, Whizbangers, KGB, CCCP and Rolling Stones all took six points. The Southpaws earned five while the Fivesome tied the Net for a single point.

Nick VanGemeren was both good and lucky tonight grabbing the closest to the pin on hole #11 and the 50/50. Kim Defosse was closest on hole #2.

Southpaws Set Team Low Gross

After a stormy day, the skies cleared and the sun came out to provide excellent golf conditions for our round.

Many teams took advantage and posted some impressive scores. Five teams shot scores in the 90’s and the Southpaws went even lower by posting an 88 to set the new Team Low Gross score.

Steve Guindon shot a 28 to move into a tie with Tim Donaldson for the Individual Low Gross. Tim also matched his low of 28 again tonight.

In the evenings matches, the Fat Shafts, Southpaws, Grip It N Sip It and Latecomers all took six points. The Whizbangers earned five points while K.G.B took four points. The Rolling Stones grabbed two points and a single point went to the Fivesome.

The closest to the pin winners were Kim Defosse who was inches away from an ace on hole #6 and Turner Wallace was best on hole #15. The 50/50 winner was Matt Knell.

Sorry no video this week. I was too busy looking for my ball. See you next week on the blue tees.

Whizbangers & Fivesome Win Playoffs

The final round of the 2020 Playoffs proved to be rather anticlimactic as both Divisions ended up as cake walks for the winning teams.

In the "A" Division, the Whizbangers made sure their lead would remain after the last nine holes and thanks to a final round score of 90, they cruised to the title with a total of 383 and a margin of 15 strokes over the second place Fat Shafts who posted a 398. The other four teams in the "A" flight were all close with only two strokes separating them but too far back to make a charge. Congratulations to the Whizbangers on a solid effort and on snapping the Fat Shafts winning streak.

The low rounds of the night were posted by Ross Prophet and Andy Koetstra who both shot 28. Denis Schick had a two over par 29. The Closest to the Pin winner on hole #4 was Sandy McLeod.

Over in the "B" Division it would have taken an incredible collapse by the Fivesome to squander their lead and they cruised to a 20 stroke victory over the second place Wedgers by shooting a four round total of 408. Eric Korver and Kim Defosse had the low rounds for the night with both shooting 32. Justin Timson earned the Closest to the Pin prize on hole #13.

This was certainly a very strange year for the league with the late start and all of the changes due to Covid19 and the entire league handled the tee times and social distancing extremely well. Thanks for making it work. I know we were disappointed there was no party this year but it's a different world we live in right now and it was obviously the right decision.

Our thanks to Steve Powell once again for ensuring the league ran smoothly all season long. It was and continues to be a fluid situation and Steve was on top of things and we would be lost without his efforts.

I know all of the members of the Wednesday Night Men's League want to thank Alida and Tom St. Denis for brainstorming and finding a way to make our league work this season. It looked as though the year could be completely lost but as the pandemic improved they were able to open things up and figure out a way to get us back out there.

The future is still uncertain but hopefully by the time Spring rolls around we'll see a more normal world emerge and next year we can get back to golf as we know it with a full 12 team schedule. Until that happens, stay safe and take care of yourselves.

Just a reminder for those who still want to golf on Wednesday nights, we will still be going out and playing best ball as long as the weather and daylight allows.

In the "A" Division the Whizbangers turned in an impressive round of 89, lead by Sandy McLeod and Taylor Rivando who each shot rounds of 29. Steve Guindon added a round of 31. This allowed them to overtake the Southpaws for the lead heading into the final week. Rivando also grabbed the Closest to the Pin prize on hole #12. Steve Westlake of the Fat Shafts had the low round of the night with a one over par 28. Mark Lafee also posted a 29.

Over in the "B" Division the Fivesome have a very comfortable 16 stroke lead with nine holes to play. Kim Defosse had the low round shooting a 29. Randy Grills stuck his tee shot tight on hole #3 to win the Closest to the Pin prize on the front nine.

2020 Playoffs - Round One

By the looks of the scores posted on night one, it looks like all teams found some trouble and I'm sure some teams will be surprised to see how close they still are in the race to win the playoffs.

In the "A" Division there is a tie for first place between the Southpaws and Rolling Stones who both shot 102. The Whizbangers sit in second after posting a 105. The Dubbers are five shots off the lead after a round of 107 and the Fat Shafts and KGB are in last place tied with scores of 110.

Tim Donaldson had the low round of the night shooting a 28. Al Wilkinson posted a two over par 29. Donaldson also left with the Closest to the Pin cash from hole #10.

Over in the "B" Division the Fivesome had the low round of the night overall with a 100. That gives them a ten stroke lead heading into week two as the Wedgers shot a 110 for second place. The Bogies are one shot back after shooting 111 and the Hackers sit in fourth spot after a team round of 118.

Kim Defosse had the Closest to the Pin on hole #1.

Please remember to check the schedule for your tee times and also note the small change to the schedule for week three in the previous post.

Southpaws Remain Perfect

What a difference a week makes. After the sweltering humid round of golf we had last week, it was a much more comfortable overcast round with a slight breeze for tonight's round of play.

Some impressive golf was turned in once again as Tim Donaldson shot an even par 27 to join Andy Koetstra and Denis Schick for the Individual Low Gross lead. Andy also shot his second round of 27 tonight, just missing a birdie on the final hole. The Fat Shafts posted their second sub-90 round as a team shooting an 89. The Southpaws had an impressive 91 score as well.

The Southpaws remain the lone team after three weeks of play to not give up a single point in their matches after taking another six points tonight. The Fat Shafts also earned six points. The Dubbers sit in second spot after taking five points while the KGB also took five points. Four points went to the Fivesome giving the Rolling Stones two points. Single points were earned by the Wedgers and Whizbangers.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Kim Defosse on hole #3 and Taylor Rivando on hole #12. The 50/50 winner was Dave Walker.

Just a reminder to team captains to make sure your team is set for next Wednesday night and everyone knows their tee times.

2019 Playoffs - Final Round

That's all she wrote for another fun year of Men's League golf and despite a little rain shower, we managed to get all 18 holes in to wrap things up as planned.

The Fat Shafts needed to use all of their 14 stroke lead on the final day to hang on for a three shot victory over the KGB to win the "A" Flight. The Fat Shafts finished with a total of 394 while the KGB picked up 11 strokes and made it close with a total of 397. The Dubbers started the day tied with the Whizbangers 20 strokes out of first and picked up some ground to claim third spot with a total of 405. The Whizbangers also picked up a little ground but finished fourth with a score of 411.

We expected the "B" Flight to be a battle on the final day and it didn't disappoint. The Fivesome had a rough day and slipped from first place to third when the dust settled with a total of 416. The Southpaws came away as champs of the "B" Flight with a slim one stroke victory over the Rolling Stones. The Southpaws finished with a score of 400 with the Rolling Stones at 401. The Bogies rounded our the division in fourth place with a score of 426.

In the "C" Flight, the CCCP had a big lead heading into the day and despite picking up a little bit of ground, the Latecomers couldn't overcome the deficit. The CCCP claimed the "C" division with a final score of 426. The Latecomers totaled 440. The Hackers took third with a score of 450 while the Wedgers struggled on the final day and settled for fourth place with a total of 470.

No list of Closest to the Pin winners was available but as I'm sure everyone noticed, there were a lot of impressive shots to earn the honours.

Many thanks as always to everyone who helped to make the day a success behind the scenes. To Tom and Alida St.Denis for their hospitality and awesome golfing conditions all season. Stephen Powell earns our gratitude as always for keeping the league running smoothly all year and for his hard work in putting together an impressive wrap up party. Thanks also to the other helpers behind the scenes today, including Debbie Stewart, Julia Bosma and Rose Moran. We can't forget Stephen Westlake and Kim Defosse who year after year run the putting contest where half of the money raised goes to Terry Fox and the Cancer Society. Thanks to everyone who took part as well.

Just a reminder that even though league play is done, you are still invited to keep coming out Wednesday nights for some always fun best ball action. It's always a good time.

Thanks for checking out the blog each week. If all goes well, we'll keep it going again next season. Have a safe and enjoyable winter. Lets hope it's a warm and short one.

2019 Playoffs - Round One

As golf conditions go, the league couldn’t have asked for anything better to kick off round one of the playoffs.

The biggest lead after night one is in the “A” Flight where the Fat Shafts will take a 12 stroke lead into round two after shooting an 88. The KGB shot 100 to sit in second, two strokes ahead of the Dubbers who posted a 102. The Whizbangers are 16 strokes off the lead after scoring a 104.

Over in the “B” Flight the battle for first is very close. The Fivesome, after shooting a round of 100, have the early lead by two strokes over the Southpaws who scored 102. The other two teams stumbled on night one as the Bogies shot 112 and the Rolling Stones finished with 114.

The CCCP find themselves with a bit of a cushion after night one. They posted a 106 and are seven strokes up on the second place Wedgers who shot 113. The Hackers were only one worse with a 114 while the Latecomers are 12 off the pace after shooting 118.

There were eight Closest to the Pin winners tonight. They included Kim Defosse, Rick Turtle, Andy Koetstra, Derek LeClair, Symen Korver, Tim Donaldson, Jim Lidster and Paul Scobie.

A lot can happen in a short time and no lead is safe as we’ve seen in the past. It’s back to the White tees next Wednesday and then on Saturday September 7th we’ll play the final 18 holes from the Blue tees followed by the wrap up party.

Tight Race for Fifth

Was that hot and muggy enough for you guys? It was easily one of the hottest and stickiest rounds of the year but that didn’t stop teams from making moves in the standings.

With only five regular season weeks left to play, several teams are making moves to solidify their playoff positions. Currently the “A” flight looks pretty solid.
This little guy played thru on the 8th green
The Fat Shafts have a 16 point lead over the KGB but the Dubbers sit just one point back in third spot. The Whizbangers are further back in fourth but hold a 13 point cushion over the fifth place teams.

The biggest battle right now is for that fifth place and the top spot in “B” flight. The Fivesome, CCCP and Southpaws are all tied for fifth with the Rolling Stones one point back of them. Even the Bogies and Latecomers could challenge for a spot in the “B” flight if they play well and get some help.

Taking all six points tonight were the Fat Shafts, Rolling Stones and Whizbangers. The Dubbers and Southpaws took five points while the Bogies earned four points. Two points went to the Wedgers while the Hackers and KGB grabbed one point each.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Kim Defosse on hole #3 and Taylor Rivando on hole #12. The 50/50 winner was Jim Turner.

How Sweep It Is

After a stumble last week, the KGB were able to take advantage of some help by the Southpaws to regain top spot in the league. However, the lead is a slim one with the lefties, Fat Shafts, Whizbangers and Rolling Stones all in the hunt.

It was feast or famine as we played from the blue tees this evening. All six matches were clean sweeps with the CCCP, Southpaws, KGB, Rolling Stones, Fat Shafts and Hackers taking all six points up for grabs.

The low team score was posted by the Fat Shaft with a 96. The low scores for the night were turned in by Andy Koetstra and Tim Donaldson who both shot 29. Andy also grabbed the closest to the pin on hole #15 while Carl Troke was most accurate on hole #6. The 50/50 winner was Kim Defosse.
