2023 Playoffs - Final Round

We couldn’t have asked for better playing conditions as we headed into our final 18 holes of the season. It was nice to return to a more normal ending to another great golf year after the turmoil of the Covid years. Let’s hope next season brings us all the way back.

In the “A” Division, the Rolling Stones cruised to a six shot victory over the second place Southpaws. The Stones finished with a total of 379 while the Southpaws scored a 385. The Fat Shafts finished well back in third with a total of 399 while Grip It N Sip It unfortunately had to drop out of play due to previous commitments.

History has shown in the league that anything can happen and no lead is safe heading into the final 18 holes of playoffs. That proved true once again as the Dubbers overcame an eight stroke deficit and moved from third place to first to win the “B” Division. The Dubbers finished with a total of 396 which was eight strokes better than both the Latecomers and KGB who tied for second place with a total of 404. The Fivesome struggled and finished well off the pace in fourth.

The “C” Division ended up being a bit of a runaway. The Whizbangers had an eight shot lead before the final day and they increased that lead to win the division by 22 strokes with a total of 420. The Wedgers held on to second place with a 442 total while the CCCP grabbed third with a 460 total. Rounding out the division in fourth place were the Hackers who shot 493.

The closest to the pin winners on the final day were Josh Hogan on hole 2, Tim Donaldson on hole 9, Nick Vangemeren on hole 11 and Brady Schick on hole 18. Josh Hogan was the only player to record a hole-in-one this year and walked away with $136 for his ace.

As always our sincere thanks to Alida and Tom for all they do behind the scenes. I would not be able to update this blog each week without Alida’s help in texting me the score sheets. Tom and Andy gave us great playing conditions all year long. A huge thanks to Steve Powell who continues to be the driving force behind our league and keeps it organized. His efforts can easily be taken for granted but I know every member truly appreciates what he does, even if we drive him crazy at times. Thanks to all of you who take the time to visit this blog throughout the season. It’s nice to know you enjoy checking it out each week.

Steve plans to get me a rundown of the league finances soon and I’ll do my best to post them once I get them. Just so you are all aware, there is a possibility of a slight increase in league dues next year which will of course go right back into the league and the cash prizes. More on that once it’s confirmed.

Below I’ve posted the final results and some photos from the final night for you to look at. If you click on a photo it should enlarge the image.

Thanks again for a terrific year and for those who won’t be out on Wednesday nights this Autumn to play the weekly fun scrambles, have a safe and healthy winter and we’ll see you in the Spring.

Fat Shafts Five Time Champs

For the fifth consecutive season, the Fat Shafts have clinched the Regular Season title. After taking four points in their match this evening, they made it impossible to be caught by the Southpaws or the Rolling Stones. Those two teams will still have to determine second and third in the final week. Congrats to the team members, Mark Kennedy, Andy Koetstra, Lyle Williams, Stephen Westlake and Gerry Fox.

The last playoff spot in the “A” Division is still unknown although Grip It N Sip It holds a slim three point lead over the KGB.

The Dubbers and Latecomers are assured to be in the “B” Division while the battle for eighth place between the Whizbangers, Fivesome and CCCP will come down to next Wednesday night. Just four points separate the teams.

Tim Donaldson had the low round of the night shooting a 28. Andy Koetstra posted a 29 and Steve Westlake shot a round of 30.

In the other matches tonight, the Southpaws, KGB and CCCP all took six points. The Rolling Stones and Grip It N Sip It earned four points while two points each went to the Whizbangers, Fivesome and Dubbers.

The closest to the pin winners were the Rolling Stones on hole 8 and Ron Eilens on hole 17. The 50/50 winner was Kim Defosse.

A special reminder to the team captains to please let Steve Powell know by next week, how many players you will have out for the final 18 holes of playoffs and the party on September 9th. Steve needs and accurate head count.

Congratulations to Andy Koetstra  who won the Club Championships last weekend. He and Nick Vangemeren needed a three hole playoff to decide things.

We’re back to the white tees for the final week of the regular season. See you then.

Solid Rounds For Many

Ideal conditions both on the course and weather wise resulted in some much lower scores overall tonight.

Six teams posted sub 100 team totals. Peter Hughes and Andy Koetstra had the low individual rounds shooting one over par 28. Thirteen others shot 32 or better. Good shooting guys.

There was some movement in the standings as the Dubbers moved into fifth place, just four points behind the fourth place KGB. The Latecomers have a slim one point edge on the Fivesome for the potential last spot in the B division come the playoffs. Only six weeks remain in the regular season.

In the nights matches, the Southpaws, Rolling Stones, Fat Shafts and Dubbers all took six points. The Whizbangers earned five points while the Fivesome took four points. The Hackers doubled their season point total by taking two points while one point went to the Wedgers.

The closest to the pin winners were Colin McDonald on hole 3 and Kim Defosse on hole 12. The 50/50 winner was Peter Hughes.

See you next Wednesday on the blue tees.

What A Smoke Show

The unprecedented wildfire season continues to bring very bad air quality to our area but luckily we got our round in tonight before the worst of it arrived.

Unfortunately a couple of teams must have had players get lost in the haze as they had to forfeit their matches this evening.

Denis Schick and Andy Koetstra played well tonight and both shot two over par rounds of 29. Al Wilkinson and Dave Horner both shot 30.

In the nights matches, the Fat Shafts, Whizbangers, KGB, CCCP and Rolling Stones took six points each. The Southpaws earned four points while the Fivesome took two points.

The closest to the pin winners were Ron Eliens on hole 1 and Dave Walker on hole 10. The 50/50 winner was Jared Culkin.

See you next Wednesday as we tackle the blue tees again.

2022 Playoffs - Week Two Results

I don’t think we could have asked for better conditions for week two of our playoffs. The course was in great shape, the temperature was ideal and the bugs…okay, two out of three isn’t bad.

The overall scoring for the round was also improved over last week and this allowed for some changes to the standings and some good scores.

Andy Koetstra had the low round of the night with an even par 27. This helped the Fat Shafts to shoot 90 and move into a slim lead in the “A” Flight. The Southpaws shot 94 and sit two shots back in second while Grip It N Sip It had a solid round of 92 and are only six shots back. The Whizbangers are 21 shots off the lead in fourth.

In the “B” Flight, the Latecomers struggled tonight and have dropped out of the lead. The Rolling Stones shot 100 again this week and have a two stroke advantage over the second place Dubbers who shot 102. The Latecomers shot 111 and sit in a tie with the KGB for third after they shot a 103.

In the “C” Flight, the CCCP who shot a 110, remain in first but their lead has shrunk to four shots over the Hackers who posted an impressive score of 103. The Wedgers and Fivesome are tied for third and are only 9 shots off the lead so anything could happen.

The full standings after week two are below. The 50/50 winner was Mike Leslie and the closest to the pin winners were as follows:

2022 Playoffs - Week One Results

After a season of dry weather on Wednesday nights, we were subjected to some damp conditions at times as we began the 2022 Playoffs.

The standings after week one are below. The 50/50 winner was Rob Campbell and the closest to the pin winners were as follows:

Donaldson Sets New Low Score

Although not as chilly as our first round of the season, tonight was still on the cool side. On the plus side, at least the bugs were staying in to keep warm.

Tim Donaldson had the low round of the evening shooting a 28. That gives him sole possession of the individual low gross lead.

In the evening’s matches, Grip It N Sip It, Southpaws, Rolling Stones, Fat Shafts and Latecomers all took six points. The Whizbangers earned four points while the Dubbers managed two points.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Mike Brummel on Hole #4 and Andy Koetstra on Hole #13. The 50/50 winner was Don Muldoon.

Fat Shafts Alone In First

Despite a few black flies and mosquitoes we had a beautiful night for a round of golf. It was time to play the blue tees again and they proved to be a little difficult for some.

Andy Koetstra had the low round of the night shooting a 30 while Denis Schick posted a 31 and Mark Kennedy had a 32. The Fat Shafts had the low team score with a 95 and moved into sole possession of 1st place. The Southpaws moved up to second while the Whizbangers and Fivesome share third.

It was nearly a clean sweep for all the matches as the Fat Shafts, Wedgers, Southpaws, Fivesome and K.G.B. all took six points. The Rolling Stones took four points while the Latecomers earned two points.

Andy Koetstra had the Closest to the Pin on hole #3 while Tim Donaldson had the best shot on hole #12. Dave Powell was the 50/50 winner this week.

Turner Strikes Again

What a difference a week makes. After last weeks frosty round it was nice to feel some warmth and see the sun during our round tonight.

It looks like everyone is settling in nicely and the scores are pretty good for the most part.  The low rounds of the night were turned in by Andy Koetstra and Sandy McLeod who both shot 29. Sandy adds his name to the Individual Low Gross leaderboard.

The Fat Shafts shaved 10 strokes off their score last week by shooting a score of 90 to set the new mark for Team Low Gross.

In the evenings matches, the Fat Shafts, Fivesome, Dubbers and Whizbangers all took six points. Grip It N Sip It took five points while the Latecomers earned four points. The Southpaws grabbed two points and the Rolling Stones took a single point.

Jim Turner won his second Closest to the Pin in as many weeks sticking his shot tight on Hole #2 while Colin MacDonald took the honours on Hole #11. The 50/50 winner was Rodney Keyes.

We’re back to the blue tees next week. See you there.

Wintery First Round

I'm sure many of us thought this opening round of league play might not happen and the weather certainly did its best to stop us but despite the near freezing temperatures, another season of league play is off and running.

To the new golfers joining us, welcome to the league and to the familiar faces, it's great to see you back for another go. Let's just hope it starts warming up soon.

On the opening night, despite the sub-par conditions (see what I did there?) it looks like we saw some decent scores. The Individual Low Gross leaders are Andy Koetstra and Nick Vangemeren who both shot 29. The Team Low Gross is held by the Fat Shafts who turned in a 100.

The Fat Shafts, Rolling Stones, Whizbangers and newcomers Grip it N Sip it all took six points. The Southpaws earned five points and the Dubbers took four points. The K.G.B. grabbed two points and a single point went to the Hackers.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Dave Schwartz on hole #1 and Jim Turner on hole #10. The 50/50 winner this week was Al Wilkinson.

Everyone do your best to stay safe and we'll see you next Wednesday night.

Week Three Results

It was an absolutely perfect night for round three of the playoffs and our first night playing from the white tees and this allowed some teams to make some small moves. But with only one week remaining, will they be able to make up the difference?

In the "A" Flight the Fat Shafts were able to increase their lead slightly and will take a six stroke advantage over the KGB into the final nine holes. The Southpaws sit 12 strokes out while the Dubbers have slipped 25 shots back.

The Rolling Stones continue to have a commanding lead over the Whizbangers, although that lead did shrink slightly after tonight's round and the Stones sit in first with a 18 stroke advantage.

In the "C" Flight it also appears to be over as the Latecomers maintained their 14 stroke advantage going into week four ahead of the CCCP.

The low round of the evening was shared by Andy Koetstra, Steve Westlake and Tim Donaldson who all shot 29. Scott Reilly and Denis Schick both shot 30.The Closest to the Pin winners were Andy Koetstra on hole #7 and Adam Farkas on hole #16.

Fat Shafts Three-peat

It came down to the final round of the regular season and a head to head showdown between the Southpaws and Fat Shafts to decide which team would finish atop the standings and in the end the Fat Shafts grabbed the six points they needed to move into first place and win the league for a third year in a row. The Southpaws will be seeded second when the playoffs begin next week.

Rounding out the "A" division will be the third place KGB and fourth place Dubbers.

The "B" flight will feature the Rolling Stones, Fivesome, Whizbangers and Hackers who finished fifth through eighth. The "C" division will consist of three teams, the Wedgers, Latecomers and CCCP. Regular Season Nearly Done

I don't know if it was the heat or the blue tees but low scoring rounds were hard to come by tonight with not one team shooting a sub-100 round. Andy Koetstra had the lowest individual score of the night shooting a 31.

With just one week left to play, playoff positions have yet to be decided officially and a lot could change in the final round next Wednesday night. Once things have been finalized and I have received the playoff schedule and format, I will try to get it up here as quickly as possible.

In tonight's action the Whizbangers, Dubbers and Southpaws all took six points. The Fat Shafts, Wedgers and KGB all earned four points while two points each went to the Rolling Stones, Fivesome and CCCP.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Dave Schwartz on hole #1 and Eric Korver on hole #10. The 50/50 winner was Kory Hietala.

Scobie Shoots Par

The blue tees proved to be a challenge for some again this week but for some it was a piece of cake. Paul Scobie had the low round of the night posting an even par 27.

Marsh Ferguson fires away at hole 7.

Al Wilkinson and Andy Koetstra both shot two over 29 for the evening.

In the nights matches, four teams swept their opponents as the KGB, Southpaws, Fat Shafts and Dubbers all took six points. The Rolling Stones and CCCP came close by earning five points each while the Whizbangers and Hackers each settled for single points. The standings continue to be close with no one team running away with it at this point of the season.

The Closest to the Pin winners tonight were Randy Conley on hole #8 and Kal Hietala on hole #17. The 50/50 winner was Tom St.Denis. See you next week.

Koetstra Claims Low Gross

Mark Adams takes aim at the 18th hole.

Andy Koetstra was dialed in tonight on the back nine blues as he turned in an impressive round of one under par 26.
This score sets the new mark to beat for the Individual Low Gross.

The KGB had the low team gross for the night with a score of 95 which gave them six points. The Fivesome also took all of their points with the bye week.

The Latecomers, Southpaws, Wedgers and Fat Shafts all earned four points while two points each went to the Dubbers, Rolling Stones, CCCP and Hackers.

The closest to the pin winners tonight were Pat Convey on hole #6 and Mark Adams on hole #15. The 50/50 winner was Tony Schick.

Whizbangers & Fivesome Win Playoffs

The final round of the 2020 Playoffs proved to be rather anticlimactic as both Divisions ended up as cake walks for the winning teams.

In the "A" Division, the Whizbangers made sure their lead would remain after the last nine holes and thanks to a final round score of 90, they cruised to the title with a total of 383 and a margin of 15 strokes over the second place Fat Shafts who posted a 398. The other four teams in the "A" flight were all close with only two strokes separating them but too far back to make a charge. Congratulations to the Whizbangers on a solid effort and on snapping the Fat Shafts winning streak.

The low rounds of the night were posted by Ross Prophet and Andy Koetstra who both shot 28. Denis Schick had a two over par 29. The Closest to the Pin winner on hole #4 was Sandy McLeod.

Over in the "B" Division it would have taken an incredible collapse by the Fivesome to squander their lead and they cruised to a 20 stroke victory over the second place Wedgers by shooting a four round total of 408. Eric Korver and Kim Defosse had the low rounds for the night with both shooting 32. Justin Timson earned the Closest to the Pin prize on hole #13.

This was certainly a very strange year for the league with the late start and all of the changes due to Covid19 and the entire league handled the tee times and social distancing extremely well. Thanks for making it work. I know we were disappointed there was no party this year but it's a different world we live in right now and it was obviously the right decision.

Our thanks to Steve Powell once again for ensuring the league ran smoothly all season long. It was and continues to be a fluid situation and Steve was on top of things and we would be lost without his efforts.

I know all of the members of the Wednesday Night Men's League want to thank Alida and Tom St. Denis for brainstorming and finding a way to make our league work this season. It looked as though the year could be completely lost but as the pandemic improved they were able to open things up and figure out a way to get us back out there.

The future is still uncertain but hopefully by the time Spring rolls around we'll see a more normal world emerge and next year we can get back to golf as we know it with a full 12 team schedule. Until that happens, stay safe and take care of yourselves.

Just a reminder for those who still want to golf on Wednesday nights, we will still be going out and playing best ball as long as the weather and daylight allows.

Final Playoff Standings

"A" Division
1. Whizbangers - 383
2. Fat Shafts - 398
3. Southpaws - 401
3. Dubbers - 401
5. K.G.B. - 402
6. Rolling Stones - 403

"B" Division

2. Wedgers - 428

4. Hackers - 439

2020 Playoffs - Round Two

That's it for the Blue Tees for this year and for some of us, it's welcome news as they proved to be troublesome on night two of the playoffs.

In the "A" Division the standings remain relatively tight and with two weeks remaining a good round by one team or a bad round by another could have a serious impact on things.

The Southpaws moved into first place by themselves with a low round of 94 for the night. That gives them an eight stroke lead over the second place Whizbangers and and nine stroke lead on the Dubbers and Rolling Stones. The KGB had a good night and are ten strokes back while the Fat Shafts continue to struggle and sit in last place 13 strokes off the pace.

The low rounds of the night were turned in by Jim Conley and Tim Donaldson who both shot 28. Kevin Wadsworth posted a two over par round of 29. Andy Koetstra won the Closest to the Pin prize on hole #2.

Over in the "B" Division, the Fivesome have a fairly comfortable lead. They shot a score of 107 and sit eight shots ahead of the Wedgers who turned in a score of 105. The Hackers are well back in third and are one stroke ahead of the Bogies.

Scott Reilly had the low round on this side shooting a 31. Eric Korver was close enough on hole #11 to win the Closest to the Pin.

Next week we start the last two weeks of playoffs with both week on the White tees. Check your tee times and we'll see you there.

"A" Division

1. Southpaws - 102 - 94 = 196
2. Whizbangers - 105 - 99 = 204
3. Dubbers - 107 - 98 = 205
3. Rolling Stones - 102 - 103 = 205
5. KGB - 110 - 96 = 206
6. Fat Shafts - 110 - 99 = 209

"B" Division

1. Fivesome - 100 - 107 = 207
2. Wedgers - 110 - 105 = 215
3. Hackers - 118 - 106 = 224
4. Bogies - 111 - 114 = 225

Fat Shafts Defend Regular Season Title

The final night of our shortened season proved to be the deciding night and when the dust settled, the Fat Shafts narrowly defended their regular season title.

Several teams had a chance to claim first place. The Fat Shafts and the second place Southpaws went head to head and both teams scored well with the Fat Shafts winning the gross for four points and the Southpaws took the net for two points. This meant the Dubbers had a chance to move into first if they could beat the KGB. Both teams played well but the KGB took all six points to play spoiler. The Rolling Stones were also in the mix and took six points to slip past the Dubbers into a tie for second place with the Southpaws.

Also taking six points tonight were the Whizbangers and the Fivesome.

Several players turned in solid rounds with Tim Donaldson shooting a 27, Andy Koetstra and Stephen Westlake both shot 28 and Al Wilkinson and Peter Hughes each shot rounds of 29. The Fat Shafts had the low team total of 89.

The 50/50 winner was Peter Hugues while the Closest to the Pin winners were Kevin Wadsworth on hole #9 and Paul Reid on hole #18.

The final regular season standings are listed on the right. Peter Hughes round last week of 26 earns him the Individual Low Gross award for the season. The Fat Shafts had the Team Low Gross this year with an 87.

The playoffs begin next Wednesday night and go for four weeks. The first two weeks will be on the Blue Tees with the last two week from the White Tees. There has been a slight change and the top six teams will compete against each other with the bottom four teams battling it out. As usual this is strictly gross score total based on your best three players each night. Tee times have yet to be set but as soon as they are Steve Powell will contact the team captains and I'll try to post them here as well.

See you next Wednesday and good luck in the playoffs.

Conley Joins Group at 27

It has become a bit more crowded in the battle for the Individual Low Gross title this season as Jim Conley joined the growing list of golfers to have shot rounds of even par 27 after he had a solid outing tonight.

Also posting rounds of 27 were Andy Koetstra and Tim Donaldson who already reside on the Low Gross list. Denis Schick shot a 28 with three fives and three birdies in his round. He also missed a hole in one by two inches on hole #17.

The Southpaws increased their lead at the top of the standings slightly with only two weeks of regular season play remaining. The Fat Shafts and Dubbers still remain in striking distance but will have their work cut out for them. The Southpaws and Dubbers had the low team scores of the night with both shooting a total of 91.

The Dubbers, Southpaws, Fivesome and Rolling Stones all took six points. The Whizbangers took four points against the Fat Shafts who earned two points on the night.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Steve Powell on hole #7 and Stephen Westlake on hole #16. The 50/50 winner this week was Scott Burnie.

See you all next week.
