2023 Playoffs - Final Round

We couldn’t have asked for better playing conditions as we headed into our final 18 holes of the season. It was nice to return to a more normal ending to another great golf year after the turmoil of the Covid years. Let’s hope next season brings us all the way back.

In the “A” Division, the Rolling Stones cruised to a six shot victory over the second place Southpaws. The Stones finished with a total of 379 while the Southpaws scored a 385. The Fat Shafts finished well back in third with a total of 399 while Grip It N Sip It unfortunately had to drop out of play due to previous commitments.

History has shown in the league that anything can happen and no lead is safe heading into the final 18 holes of playoffs. That proved true once again as the Dubbers overcame an eight stroke deficit and moved from third place to first to win the “B” Division. The Dubbers finished with a total of 396 which was eight strokes better than both the Latecomers and KGB who tied for second place with a total of 404. The Fivesome struggled and finished well off the pace in fourth.

The “C” Division ended up being a bit of a runaway. The Whizbangers had an eight shot lead before the final day and they increased that lead to win the division by 22 strokes with a total of 420. The Wedgers held on to second place with a 442 total while the CCCP grabbed third with a 460 total. Rounding out the division in fourth place were the Hackers who shot 493.

The closest to the pin winners on the final day were Josh Hogan on hole 2, Tim Donaldson on hole 9, Nick Vangemeren on hole 11 and Brady Schick on hole 18. Josh Hogan was the only player to record a hole-in-one this year and walked away with $136 for his ace.

As always our sincere thanks to Alida and Tom for all they do behind the scenes. I would not be able to update this blog each week without Alida’s help in texting me the score sheets. Tom and Andy gave us great playing conditions all year long. A huge thanks to Steve Powell who continues to be the driving force behind our league and keeps it organized. His efforts can easily be taken for granted but I know every member truly appreciates what he does, even if we drive him crazy at times. Thanks to all of you who take the time to visit this blog throughout the season. It’s nice to know you enjoy checking it out each week.

Steve plans to get me a rundown of the league finances soon and I’ll do my best to post them once I get them. Just so you are all aware, there is a possibility of a slight increase in league dues next year which will of course go right back into the league and the cash prizes. More on that once it’s confirmed.

Below I’ve posted the final results and some photos from the final night for you to look at. If you click on a photo it should enlarge the image.

Thanks again for a terrific year and for those who won’t be out on Wednesday nights this Autumn to play the weekly fun scrambles, have a safe and healthy winter and we’ll see you in the Spring.

Fat Shafts Five Time Champs

For the fifth consecutive season, the Fat Shafts have clinched the Regular Season title. After taking four points in their match this evening, they made it impossible to be caught by the Southpaws or the Rolling Stones. Those two teams will still have to determine second and third in the final week. Congrats to the team members, Mark Kennedy, Andy Koetstra, Lyle Williams, Stephen Westlake and Gerry Fox.

The last playoff spot in the “A” Division is still unknown although Grip It N Sip It holds a slim three point lead over the KGB.

The Dubbers and Latecomers are assured to be in the “B” Division while the battle for eighth place between the Whizbangers, Fivesome and CCCP will come down to next Wednesday night. Just four points separate the teams.

Tim Donaldson had the low round of the night shooting a 28. Andy Koetstra posted a 29 and Steve Westlake shot a round of 30.

In the other matches tonight, the Southpaws, KGB and CCCP all took six points. The Rolling Stones and Grip It N Sip It earned four points while two points each went to the Whizbangers, Fivesome and Dubbers.

The closest to the pin winners were the Rolling Stones on hole 8 and Ron Eilens on hole 17. The 50/50 winner was Kim Defosse.

A special reminder to the team captains to please let Steve Powell know by next week, how many players you will have out for the final 18 holes of playoffs and the party on September 9th. Steve needs and accurate head count.

Congratulations to Andy Koetstra  who won the Club Championships last weekend. He and Nick Vangemeren needed a three hole playoff to decide things.

We’re back to the white tees for the final week of the regular season. See you then.

Still Time For Moves

With just two weeks of regular season play remaining, there’s still plenty left to be decided.

Both the Southpaws and Rolling Stones have a chance to catch the first place Fat Shafts who hold a nine point lead.

The fourth spot in the top playoff division is also yet to be determined as Grip It N Sip It and KGB battle it out. The Dubbers are mathematically still in the mix.

The “B” Division is also anyone’s guess as several teams can solidify their spot or drop to the “C” Division. Next week could clear things up a bit more.

Taking all six points tonight were the Fat Shafts, Southpaws, Grip It N Sip It, Fivesome and the Latecomers. The Rolling Stones earned five points while the KGB took one point.

Tim Donaldson had the low round of the night shooting a 28 while Peter Hughes posted a 29.

The closest to the pin winners were Terry Letch on hole 7 and Ian Rogers on hole 16. The 50/50 winner was Al Wilkinson.

We’re back to the blue tees next week. See you then.

For those members taking part in the Club Championships this weekend, best of luck and think dry thoughts.

Dubbers Move Up

Despite the humid and buggy night, we certainly can’t complain about the golf conditions so far this season. Tonight, despite being a bit toasty, was another excellent evening to be swinging the clubs.

Tim Donaldson led all golfers tonight by shooting a round of 26 on the front nine.  That left him just shy of tying the Individual Low Gross. He did help his Southpaws teammates take six points and shorten the lead of the first place Fat Shafts to three. They only managed five points.

The Dubbers, who took six points, took advantage of a pointless night by the KGB to slip ahead of them into fourth place and the potential last spot in the “A” division of the playoffs which are quickly approaching. The Fat Shafts and Southpaws have both clinched a spot in the top division.

Also taking six points were Grip It N Sip It and the Rolling Stones. The Latecomers took four points and Fivesome earned two points. The CCCP grabbed one point.

The closest to the pin winners were Rodney Keyes on hole 5 and Coady MacGillivary on hole 14. The 50/50 winner was Brady Schick.

With only four weeks of regular season play left, we return to the blue tees next week. See you then.

Southpaws Streak Stopped

Tim Donaldson tees off on hole 13.
The arrival of summer definitely turned up the heat after a cool Spring start to the season. Unfortunately for the Southpaws they weren’t able to keep their perfect hot start to the season going.

In the head-to-head battle of the top two teams, the Fat Shaft used a score of 90 to hand the Southpaws their first blemish of the year. The Fat Shafts scored five points to move into first place. The Southpaws took a single point and sit two points back in second.

Taking all six points in their matches were the Dubbers, KGB, Rolling Stones and Latecomers. Grip It N Sip It took five points and the Whizbangers earned a single point.

The closest to the pin winners were Steve Rankin on hole 9 and Josh Hogan on hole 18. Ross Prophet was the 50/50 winner.

See you next Wednesday back on the white tees.

Muggy End To May

In typical Ontario fashion, our temperatures have gone from chilly to sweltering quicker than I can donate a golf ball to the woods. The balmy conditions helped produce some better scores tonight as well as plenty of mosquitoes.

The Southpaws remain perfect on the season with the Fat Shafts two points behind in second. The middle of the pack is very tight with only seven points separating fourth from tenth place.

In the evenings matches the CCCP, Southpaws, Rolling Stones and Fat Shafts took six points each. The Latecomers and Dubbers grabbed four points while KGB and Grip It N Sip It took two points each.

The closest to the pin winners were Peter Hughes on hole #6 and Jamie Sandercock on hole #15. The 50/50 winner was Tyler Donaldson.

We’re on the blue tees next week. See you there.

Singing The Blues

The cool Spring conditions continued as we moved our game to the blue tees for the first time this season. This proved to be an added challenge for many based on the overall scores.

Denis Schick and Tim Donaldson had the low rounds of the night shooting 31. The Fat Shafts tied the Team Low Gross by posting a 98.

The Southpaws and Rolling Stones remain perfect after grabbing another six points each tonight. The Fat Shafts, Whizbangers and Fivesome also took all the points in their matches. The CCCP took four points while the Dubbers earned two points.

The closest to the pin winners were Jim Bryant on hole #2 and Josh McDonald on hole #11. The 50/50 winner was Carl Snutch.

Back to the white tees next week. See you then.

Chilly Season Start

I think it’s safe to say we’ve had colder first nights to start a new season but this one definitely ranked up there. Or perhaps I should say down there. On the bright side, at least we weren’t snowed out as we have been in past years.

It was nice to see many familiar faces in the clubhouse before we started our round and we also want to welcome all of the new league members as well.

The scores were probably a bit higher overall but that’s to be expected with all of the winter rust to shake off. Tyler Donaldson and Colin McDonald had a good start and set the Individual Low Gross mark by shooting 30. The Team Low Gross to start the season was shot by both the KGB and Grip It N Sip It with a 98.

Jumping out to the early lead in the league standings were the Rolling Stones, Grip It N Sip It and the Southpaws who earned all six points in their matches. The KGB, Whizbangers and Fat Shafts each took four points while two points went to the Dubbers, CCCP and Latecomers.

The closest to the pin winners were Kevin Wadsworth on hole #1 and Derek LeClair on hole #10. The 50/50 winner was Dave Wilson.

Welcome back and see you next week.

Low Scoring Night For Many

We couldn’t have timed the completion of tonight’s round much better as the rain waited until we finished before the soaking began.

After a quick check of the scoresheet it was clear to see the scores for many were very impressive. Although nobody matched the individual low gross leading score, at least five golfers shot scores under 30. The lowest score was turned in by Tim Donaldson who shot an even par 27. Tim was also the 50/50 winner.

In the nights matches, the Fivesome, Whizbangers, Grip It N Sip It, Southpaws and Fat Shafts all took six points. The Dubbers earned four points while two points went to the KGB.

Teams Making Moves

As we start the home stretch to the end of the season and the push for playoff spots, some teams made good moves tonight.

The first place Fat Shafts stumbled and gave up six points to the second place Southpaws who moved within six points of top spot.

The Dubbers grabbed six points to move them into fourth place just one point ahead of Grip It N Sip It who managed just two points tonight. The Whizbangers earned four points in that match and are hanging on to third place.

Also taking six points tonight were the Latecomers and KGB. The Rolling Stones took five points while the CCCP grabbed a single point.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Tyler Rittwage on hole #1 and Rick Dean on hole #10. The 50/50 winner was Tyler Donaldson.

The Heat Is On

That was hotter than a Leafs fan after another game seven collapse out there tonight.

Summer arrived in full force as the temperature was above 30 degrees when we teed off for tonight’s round. A return to the blue tees also saw some impressive scores overall. Stephen Westlake had the low round of the night shooting a 29.

In the evenings matches the Southpaws and Grip It N Sip It had a close game as they tied and split the gross but the Southpaws grabbed the net by one. So the Southpaws took four points and Grip It N Sip It earned two points.

In the other matches, the Fat Shafts, Latecomers, Dubbers and K.G.B. all swept six points. Meanwhile, the Fivesome took four points and the Wedgers got two points.

Vangemeren Shoots Twenty Six

It’s not officially summer yet but things were definitely heating up on the course tonight with some great scores and the weather.

We have a new leader for the Individual Low Gross after Nick Vangemeren posted a one under par round of 26. His score combined with a pair of 30’s by Paul Scobie and Tim Donaldson improved the Southpaws Team Low Gross with an 86.

The Fat Shafts finally faltered and lost their first point of the season as they took five from the Whizbangers who earned a single point by splitting the net in their match.

The closest to the pin winners were Thom Christmann on hole #8 and John Keuning on hole #17. The 50/50 winner was David Schwartz.

The schedule for next week shows we will be playing the white tees again but I was informed that it’s likely that we will be playing the blue tees instead. See you then.

Fat Shafts Remain Perfect

It was another beautiful night for golf as we once again tackled the blue tees. Despite the calm conditions, just two teams were able to shoot rounds in the 90’s tonight. Stephen Westlake had the low round of the evening posting a 29.

After seven weeks of play, the Fat Shafts have yet to surrender a single point and hold an eight point lead over the Whizbangers. The Southpaws moved up in the standings to sit alone in third place.

All of the matches tonight were sweeps as all six points went to the Southpaws, Whizbangers, Fat Shafts, K.G.B, C.C.C.P and Dubbers.

Southpaws Set Team Low Gross

After a stormy day, the skies cleared and the sun came out to provide excellent golf conditions for our round.

Many teams took advantage and posted some impressive scores. Five teams shot scores in the 90’s and the Southpaws went even lower by posting an 88 to set the new Team Low Gross score.

Steve Guindon shot a 28 to move into a tie with Tim Donaldson for the Individual Low Gross. Tim also matched his low of 28 again tonight.

In the evenings matches, the Fat Shafts, Southpaws, Grip It N Sip It and Latecomers all took six points. The Whizbangers earned five points while K.G.B took four points. The Rolling Stones grabbed two points and a single point went to the Fivesome.

Sorry no video this week. I was too busy looking for my ball. See you next week on the blue tees.

Donaldson Sets New Low Score

Although not as chilly as our first round of the season, tonight was still on the cool side. On the plus side, at least the bugs were staying in to keep warm.

Tim Donaldson had the low round of the evening shooting a 28. That gives him sole possession of the individual low gross lead.

In the evening’s matches, Grip It N Sip It, Southpaws, Rolling Stones, Fat Shafts and Latecomers all took six points. The Whizbangers earned four points while the Dubbers managed two points.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Mike Brummel on Hole #4 and Andy Koetstra on Hole #13. The 50/50 winner was Don Muldoon.

Fat Shafts Alone In First

Despite a few black flies and mosquitoes we had a beautiful night for a round of golf. It was time to play the blue tees again and they proved to be a little difficult for some.

Andy Koetstra had the low round of the night shooting a 30 while Denis Schick posted a 31 and Mark Kennedy had a 32. The Fat Shafts had the low team score with a 95 and moved into sole possession of 1st place. The Southpaws moved up to second while the Whizbangers and Fivesome share third.

It was nearly a clean sweep for all the matches as the Fat Shafts, Wedgers, Southpaws, Fivesome and K.G.B. all took six points. The Rolling Stones took four points while the Latecomers earned two points.

Andy Koetstra had the Closest to the Pin on hole #3 while Tim Donaldson had the best shot on hole #12. Dave Powell was the 50/50 winner this week.

Back to the white tees next week.

Week Three Results

It was an absolutely perfect night for round three of the playoffs and our first night playing from the white tees and this allowed some teams to make some small moves. But with only one week remaining, will they be able to make up the difference?

In the "A" Flight the Fat Shafts were able to increase their lead slightly and will take a six stroke advantage over the KGB into the final nine holes. The Southpaws sit 12 strokes out while the Dubbers have slipped 25 shots back.

The Rolling Stones continue to have a commanding lead over the Whizbangers, although that lead did shrink slightly after tonight's round and the Stones sit in first with a 18 stroke advantage.

In the "C" Flight it also appears to be over as the Latecomers maintained their 14 stroke advantage going into week four ahead of the CCCP.

The low round of the evening was shared by Andy Koetstra, Steve Westlake and Tim Donaldson who all shot 29. Scott Reilly and Denis Schick both shot 30.The Closest to the Pin winners were Andy Koetstra on hole #7 and Adam Farkas on hole #16.

Southpaws Alone In First

With summer less than a week away from its official arrival the conditions, although a bit breezy, couldn't have been much better for tonight's round of golf.

The Southpaws had the low team round of the evening with a 99 and grabbed six points from the Latecomers to move into first place all alone. The Fat Shafts and KGB went into the evening tied for first but now both sit in a tie for second place after an even split earning three points each.

Also earning all six points tonight were the Hackers, Rolling Stones and Dubbers. The  Whizbangers took five points which allowed the Wedgers to earn a single point.

Tim Donaldson tied the Individual Low Gross score by shooting a 28. Andy Koetstra and Rick Dean each shot rounds of 30.

The Closest to the Pin winners tonight were Paul Scobie on hole #3 and Randy Grills on hole #12. The 50/50 winner was Matt Knell.

Sorry no video or photos this week but I was too busy counting my score. See you next Wednesday night.

Hot and Humid Round

The summer hasn't officially arrived yet but you'd never know that based on the conditions we faced on night two of league play and the first round playing from the blue tees.

The added distance of the blues always provides an extra challenge and judging by the scores for most of us that was the case.

The low round of the night was 30, shot by both Dave Horner and Tim Donaldson. A new Team Low Gross was turned in by the KGB with a 97.

In the evenings matches, the Wedgers, Southpaws, KGB, Whizbangers and Fat Shafts all took six points. The Fivesome grabbed four points while the Rolling Stones took two points.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Derick LeClair on hole #2 and Brent Donnan on hole #11. The 50/50 winner was Rick Dean.

We're back to the white tees next week. See you then.
