2023 Playoffs - Round 1

We haven’t quite arrived at Labour Day but it already felt quite autumn like as we began the playoffs tonight

In the “A” Division, the Rolling Stones got off to a solid start led by Al Wilkinson who shot a 27. The Stones sit in first with a total of 91. Grip It N Sip It are in second place after nine holes, just one shot back at 92. The Southpaws are two shots off the lead after posting a 93 and the Fat Shafts stumbled out of the gate and posted a score of 104 to sit 13 strokes off the lead.

The KGB are four strokes back in second place after posting a 101. The Dubbers are 7 shots out of first after shooting a 104 and sitting in fourth place is the Fivesome who shot a 116 on night one.

The “C” Division is a bit more wide open but there are still plenty of holes left to play. The Whizbangers have the early lead after scoring a 108. Six strokes back in second place are the Wedgers with a 114. The CCCP posted a 120 and the Hackers are 13 strokes off the lead after shooting a 121.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Paul Scobie on hole 1 and Peter Hughes on hole 10. The 50/50 winner was Denis Schick.

Still Time For Moves

With just two weeks of regular season play remaining, there’s still plenty left to be decided.

Both the Southpaws and Rolling Stones have a chance to catch the first place Fat Shafts who hold a nine point lead.

The fourth spot in the top playoff division is also yet to be determined as Grip It N Sip It and KGB battle it out. The Dubbers are mathematically still in the mix.

The “B” Division is also anyone’s guess as several teams can solidify their spot or drop to the “C” Division. Next week could clear things up a bit more.

Taking all six points tonight were the Fat Shafts, Southpaws, Grip It N Sip It, Fivesome and the Latecomers. The Rolling Stones earned five points while the KGB took one point.

Tim Donaldson had the low round of the night shooting a 28 while Peter Hughes posted a 29.

The closest to the pin winners were Terry Letch on hole 7 and Ian Rogers on hole 16. The 50/50 winner was Al Wilkinson.

We’re back to the blue tees next week. See you then.

For those members taking part in the Club Championships this weekend, best of luck and think dry thoughts.

Fat Shafts Regain Lead

Peter Hughes tees off on hole #2

Once again, based on the majority of the scores, hitting from the longer blue tees proved to be a challenge this evening. The Fat Shafts were the only team to post a sub 100 team score of 98.

A trio of players, Al Wilkinson, Kevin Wadsworth and Colin McDonald, had the low individual rounds of 30 tonight.

The Fat Shafts took advantage of an off night by the Southpaws to move back into sole possession of top spot. The Dubbers sit five points out of fourth while Grip It N Sip It are one point back in sixth and the Whizbangers are only two points back in seventh.

The Latecomers continue to cling to eighth place with a one point lead over Fivesome for the last spot in the B division of the playoffs. Just five weeks remain in the regular season.

Taking six points in their matches were the Rolling Stones, Wedgers and CCCP. The Fat Shafts and Whizbangers grabbed five points while Grip It N Sip It took four points. The KGB took two while the Dubbers and Southpaws settled for a single point.

The closest to the pin winners tonight were Al Wilkinson  on hole 4 and Jamie Sandercock on hole 13. The 50/50 winner was Matt Knell.

We’re back to the white tees next Wednesday.

UPDATED: The standings have been adjusted and the story should be correct now after a scoring error was found on the sheet on Thursday.

What A Smoke Show

The unprecedented wildfire season continues to bring very bad air quality to our area but luckily we got our round in tonight before the worst of it arrived.

Unfortunately a couple of teams must have had players get lost in the haze as they had to forfeit their matches this evening.

Denis Schick and Andy Koetstra played well tonight and both shot two over par rounds of 29. Al Wilkinson and Dave Horner both shot 30.

In the nights matches, the Fat Shafts, Whizbangers, KGB, CCCP and Rolling Stones took six points each. The Southpaws earned four points while the Fivesome took two points.

The closest to the pin winners were Ron Eliens on hole 1 and Dave Walker on hole 10. The 50/50 winner was Jared Culkin.

See you next Wednesday as we tackle the blue tees again.

Memory Lane - 2015

I thought it might be fun from time to time to share short video clips from seasons past. They might be funny or impressive or even remind us of friends that have passed or just left the league.

In this video we have a little fun with Al Wilkinson of the Rolling Stones who chose to take a different approach to hole #4.

Wintery First Round

I'm sure many of us thought this opening round of league play might not happen and the weather certainly did its best to stop us but despite the near freezing temperatures, another season of league play is off and running.

To the new golfers joining us, welcome to the league and to the familiar faces, it's great to see you back for another go. Let's just hope it starts warming up soon.

On the opening night, despite the sub-par conditions (see what I did there?) it looks like we saw some decent scores. The Individual Low Gross leaders are Andy Koetstra and Nick Vangemeren who both shot 29. The Team Low Gross is held by the Fat Shafts who turned in a 100.

The Fat Shafts, Rolling Stones, Whizbangers and newcomers Grip it N Sip it all took six points. The Southpaws earned five points and the Dubbers took four points. The K.G.B. grabbed two points and a single point went to the Hackers.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Dave Schwartz on hole #1 and Jim Turner on hole #10. The 50/50 winner this week was Al Wilkinson.

Everyone do your best to stay safe and we'll see you next Wednesday night.

Fat Shafts Three-peat

It came down to the final round of the regular season and a head to head showdown between the Southpaws and Fat Shafts to decide which team would finish atop the standings and in the end the Fat Shafts grabbed the six points they needed to move into first place and win the league for a third year in a row. The Southpaws will be seeded second when the playoffs begin next week.

Rounding out the "A" division will be the third place KGB and fourth place Dubbers.

The "B" flight will feature the Rolling Stones, Fivesome, Whizbangers and Hackers who finished fifth through eighth. The "C" division will consist of three teams, the Wedgers, Latecomers and CCCP. Scobie Shoots Par

The blue tees proved to be a challenge for some again this week but for some it was a piece of cake. Paul Scobie had the low round of the night posting an even par 27.

Marsh Ferguson fires away at hole 7.

Al Wilkinson and Andy Koetstra both shot two over 29 for the evening.

In the nights matches, four teams swept their opponents as the KGB, Southpaws, Fat Shafts and Dubbers all took six points. The Rolling Stones and CCCP came close by earning five points each while the Whizbangers and Hackers each settled for single points. The standings continue to be close with no one team running away with it at this point of the season.

The Closest to the Pin winners tonight were Randy Conley on hole #8 and Kal Hietala on hole #17. The 50/50 winner was Tom St.Denis. See you next week.

2020 Playoffs - Round One

By the looks of the scores posted on night one, it looks like all teams found some trouble and I'm sure some teams will be surprised to see how close they still are in the race to win the playoffs.

In the "A" Division there is a tie for first place between the Southpaws and Rolling Stones who both shot 102. The Whizbangers sit in second after posting a 105. The Dubbers are five shots off the lead after a round of 107 and the Fat Shafts and KGB are in last place tied with scores of 110.

Tim Donaldson had the low round of the night shooting a 28. Al Wilkinson posted a two over par 29. Donaldson also left with the Closest to the Pin cash from hole #10.

Over in the "B" Division the Fivesome had the low round of the night overall with a 100. That gives them a ten stroke lead heading into week two as the Wedgers shot a 110 for second place. The Bogies are one shot back after shooting 111 and the Hackers sit in fourth spot after a team round of 118.

Kim Defosse had the Closest to the Pin on hole #1.

Please remember to check the schedule for your tee times and also note the small change to the schedule for week three in the previous post.

Fat Shafts Defend Regular Season Title

The final night of our shortened season proved to be the deciding night and when the dust settled, the Fat Shafts narrowly defended their regular season title.

Several teams had a chance to claim first place. The Fat Shafts and the second place Southpaws went head to head and both teams scored well with the Fat Shafts winning the gross for four points and the Southpaws took the net for two points. This meant the Dubbers had a chance to move into first if they could beat the KGB. Both teams played well but the KGB took all six points to play spoiler. The Rolling Stones were also in the mix and took six points to slip past the Dubbers into a tie for second place with the Southpaws.

Also taking six points tonight were the Whizbangers and the Fivesome.

Several players turned in solid rounds with Tim Donaldson shooting a 27, Andy Koetstra and Stephen Westlake both shot 28 and Al Wilkinson and Peter Hughes each shot rounds of 29. The Fat Shafts had the low team total of 89.

The 50/50 winner was Peter Hugues while the Closest to the Pin winners were Kevin Wadsworth on hole #9 and Paul Reid on hole #18.

The final regular season standings are listed on the right. Peter Hughes round last week of 26 earns him the Individual Low Gross award for the season. The Fat Shafts had the Team Low Gross this year with an 87.

The playoffs begin next Wednesday night and go for four weeks. The first two weeks will be on the Blue Tees with the last two week from the White Tees. There has been a slight change and the top six teams will compete against each other with the bottom four teams battling it out. As usual this is strictly gross score total based on your best three players each night. Tee times have yet to be set but as soon as they are Steve Powell will contact the team captains and I'll try to post them here as well.

See you next Wednesday and good luck in the playoffs.

Some Sing The Blues

The Blue tees on paper don't look too intimidating but for many of us the added challenge can prove difficult and it looks like that was the case for some tonight. The weather was hot and sunny so it was just a matter of finding a clear path to the green.

Tim Donaldson turned in the lowest score of the night by matching his season low of even par 27. Andy Koetstra was one shot off the pace posting a 28.

Three teams managed to grab all of the points up for grabs in their matches as the Southpaws, Dubbers and Fat Shafts each earned six points. The KGB took five points while the Bogies moved up in the standings by taking four points. The Hackers grabbed two points and a single point went to the Wedgers.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Al Wilkinson on hole #6 and Taylor Rivando on hole #15. The 50/50 winner this week was Adam Farkas.

I've been informed that when the playoffs begin in four weeks, there will be two groups instead of the usual three. The top four teams after the regular season will playoff against each other while the lower six teams will do battle. If I hear of any other details I'll be sure to share them. See you next Wednesday.

Season Humming Along

It still feels a bit odd as we continue to adjust to the way things are with the league and golfing in general this year but everyone seems to be handling it well.

The weather was ideal for a round of golf Wednesday night as week two of our shortened season teed off and produced some impressive scores on the longer blue tees. Tim Donaldson had the low round of the night shooting a 29 on the front nine and combining with his teammates to post the low round of the night with a 92.

The Southpaws and Dubbers were the only two teams to take all six points in their matches. The Rolling Stones came close by earning five points. The KGB and Hackers each took four points while the Fivesome and Wedgers snagged two points. The Fat Shafts had to settle for one point.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Tim Donaldson on hole #2 and Al Wilkinson on hole #11. The 50/50 winner this week was Dave Reid.

Keep cool this week and stay safe until we hit the links again next Wednesday night. Please check the schedule for your tee times and make sure your team lineup is set ahead of time.

Better Late Than Never

Covid19 really put a wrench in our plans this year in more ways than one and although we're about two months late starting an abbreviated season, it was nice to get out tonight and see some familiar faces again.

It was a hot round in more ways than one with some impressive scores and shots along with the extreme heat and humidity.

Denis Schick and Andy Koetstra set the mark to beat for Individual Low Gross as they both posted an even par round of 27. Al Wilkinson and Stephen Westlake also had impressive rounds with each of them finishing with 29. The Team Low Gross mark was set by the Fat Shafts who combined for a total of 87.

Three teams grabbed all six points up for grabs with the Fat Shafts, Southpaws and Whizbangers sweeping their matches. The Bogies took four points while the Dubbers and Rolling Stones battled to a tie and three points each. The Wedgers earned two points on the night.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Andy Koetstra on Hole #1 and Paul Scobie on Hole #10. Lyle Williams was the first 50/50 winner of the season.

Thanks to Steve Powell and Tom and Alida for getting the league set up on short notice and during these crazy times.

Just a reminder to check your tee times for next Wednesday and make sure you have your four golfers there and ready to go 10 minutes prior.

Hole in One for Wilky

A good round was made even better for Al Wilkinson tonight as he became the latest league member to shoot a hole-in-one.
Al Wilkinson aced hole #2 tonight.
Wilkinson used a pitching wedge on hole number two and sank his tee shot to earn the ace. Congrats Al!

The Individual Low Gross leader board also got a bit more crowded as Tim Donaldson shot a round of even par 27 to tie the three others at that low score for the year. There's still two weeks left for someone try and beat them.

Scoring was spread out tonight with only the KGB and Rolling Stones taking all six point in their matches. Elsewhere the Hackers, Fat Shafts, Whizbangers and Latecomers took four points each while two points went to the Bogies, CCCP, Dubbers and Fivesome.

The Closest to the pin winners were Tim Donaldson on hole #6 and Symen Korver on hole #15. The 50/50 winner was Dustin McLeod.

Rivando Adds His Name

Is eight really enough? When it comes to the Individual Low Gross leaders, it seems to be the case for now as Taylor Rivando posted a 29 tonight to add his name to the growing list.

It’s likely only a matter of time before someone shoots a lower score to claim the lead all to themselves but in the meantime, it seems it’s the more the merrier.

Al Wilkinson, Andy Koetstra and Tim Donaldson all posted 29’s but they already share the top spot.

In other news, the 1st place Fat Shafts finally lost points as the Hackers took 2 points in their match. The Shafts had to settle for four.

Elsewhere, the Southpaws are starting to claw their way out of the basement by taking six points from the Rolling Stones and they also shot a 93 which was the low round of the night. Also earning all six points were the CCCP, Dubbers and Fivesome. The Whizbangers had another solid night and took five points from the KGB who split the net to get a single point.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Tim Donaldson on hole #6 and Ralph Lambert on hole #15. The 50/50 winner was Roger Bulman.

Are you on Twitter? Feel free to follow the league Twitter Account for updated standings, cancellations or any other on the fly news or updates. You’ll find it here: @mhwnml.

Crowded Low Gross

The score of 29 was a popular one tonight as four golfers posted this low score.
Al Wilkinson on hole #8.
Paul Scobie, Denis Schick, Andy Koetstra and Rick Dean now hold a share of the Individual Low Gross lead with Tim Donaldson and Al Wilkinson.

The KGB who already held the Team Low Gross lead matched their low total of 92 again this evening but the Whizbangers also shot 92 and share that mark as well.

The Whizbangers took six points to move into second place behind the Fat Shafts who also earned six points to remain on top. The KGB grabbed five points while the Rolling Stones and Wedgers each took four. The CCCP and Fivesome halved their match for three points each. The Latecomers and Hackers both snagged two points while the Bogies left with a single point.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Mark Kennedy on hole #4 and Derek LeClair on hole #13. The 50/50 winner was Jimmy Rogers.

Blue Tees Were Trouble

Playing the blue tees for the second time this season proved to be tough for many as scoring was high overall tonight.

Al Wilkinson and Tyler Donaldson posted the low scores for the round with each of them shooting 31.
Jim Turner sets his sights on hole #12.
The lowest team total of the night went to the Rolling Stones with a combined total of 102.

The Fat Shafts increased their lead slightly by taking six points from the KGB. Also sweeping all the points in their matches were the Dubbers, Whizbangers, Latecomers and Rolling Stones. The Fivesome grabbed four points while the Hackers took two.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Coady MacGillivary on hole #3 and Tim Donaldson on hole #12. The 50/50 winner was Peter Hughes.

Wilkinson Ties Low Gross

It was a chilly, overcast and judging by some of the scores, a difficult round as week two saw us play the longer blue tees for the first time this season.

Only one team posted a sub-100 round this evening as the Fat Shafts turned in a 99 and took six points in their match.
Glenn Lonergan just misses on hole #8.
Also taking all six were the Dubbers and CCCP. The KGB and Southpaws each earned five points while the Whizbangers grabbed four points. Taking two points was the Hackers while single points went to the Wedgers and Fivesome.

Al Wilkinson shot the low round of 29 to earn a share of the Individual Low Gross lead. The closest to the pin winners were Mark Adams on hole #2 and Tom St.Denis on hole #11. The 50/50 winner this week was Randy Conley.

Dean Ends Season Hot

Marty McDonald tees off on the ninth hole.
It was the last night of regular season and the last opportunity to grab the individual low gross prize for the season and Rick Dean did just that with a bang. He broke the three-way tie at even par 27 by shooting an impressive two-under par 25 to earn the honour by himself. His score along with a 30 by Kevin Wadsworth and a 33 by Jim Turner improved on the KGB's Team Low Gross crown with an 88.

The KGB, Wedgers and Southpaws all took six points tonight. Five points each went to the Latecomers and Fivesome. The Fat Shafts took four points from the Dubbers who settled for two points. Single points went to the Rolling Stones and CCCP.

The playoff pools are now all set. The "A" Flight was already decided with the KGB, Southpaws, Rolling Stones and Fat Shafts battling each other. The "B" Flight saw the teams solidify their positions with the Whizbangers, Dubbers, Latecomers and Wedgers set to meet. The "C" Flight will see the Fivesome, Bogies, Hackers and CCCP fight it out.

The playoffs will take place the next two Wednesdays from the White Tees and then the final 18 holes from the Blue Tees on Saturday September 8th beginning at 2:00 p.m.

The closest to the pin winners this evening were Kyle Wilkinson on hole #7 and Tim Donaldson on hole 16. The 50/50 winner was Carl Snutch.
