2023 Playoffs - Round 1

We haven’t quite arrived at Labour Day but it already felt quite autumn like as we began the playoffs tonight

In the “A” Division, the Rolling Stones got off to a solid start led by Al Wilkinson who shot a 27. The Stones sit in first with a total of 91. Grip It N Sip It are in second place after nine holes, just one shot back at 92. The Southpaws are two shots off the lead after posting a 93 and the Fat Shafts stumbled out of the gate and posted a score of 104 to sit 13 strokes off the lead.

Over in the “B” Division the Latecomers have the early lead after shooting a score of 97. Josh Hogan shot a round of 30 to lead his team. The KGB are four strokes back in second place after posting a 101. The Dubbers are 7 shots out of first after shooting a 104 and sitting in fourth place is the Fivesome who shot a 116 on night one.

The “C” Division is a bit more wide open but there are still plenty of holes left to play. The Whizbangers have the early lead after scoring a 108. Six strokes back in second place are the Wedgers with a 114. The CCCP posted a 120 and the Hackers are 13 strokes off the lead after shooting a 121.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Paul Scobie on hole 1 and Peter Hughes on hole 10. The 50/50 winner was Denis Schick.

Still Time For Moves

With just two weeks of regular season play remaining, there’s still plenty left to be decided.

Both the Southpaws and Rolling Stones have a chance to catch the first place Fat Shafts who hold a nine point lead.

The fourth spot in the top playoff division is also yet to be determined as Grip It N Sip It and KGB battle it out. The Dubbers are mathematically still in the mix.

The “B” Division is also anyone’s guess as several teams can solidify their spot or drop to the “C” Division. Next week could clear things up a bit more.

Taking all six points tonight were the Fat Shafts, Southpaws, Grip It N Sip It, Fivesome and the Latecomers. The Rolling Stones earned five points while the KGB took one point.

Tim Donaldson had the low round of the night shooting a 28 while Peter Hughes posted a 29.

The closest to the pin winners were Terry Letch on hole 7 and Ian Rogers on hole 16. The 50/50 winner was Al Wilkinson.

We’re back to the blue tees next week. See you then.

For those members taking part in the Club Championships this weekend, best of luck and think dry thoughts.

Fat Shafts Regain Lead

Peter Hughes tees off on hole #2

Once again, based on the majority of the scores, hitting from the longer blue tees proved to be a challenge this evening. The Fat Shafts were the only team to post a sub 100 team score of 98.

A trio of players, Al Wilkinson, Kevin Wadsworth and Colin McDonald, had the low individual rounds of 30 tonight.

The Fat Shafts took advantage of an off night by the Southpaws to move back into sole possession of top spot. The Dubbers sit five points out of fourth while Grip It N Sip It are one point back in sixth and the Whizbangers are only two points back in seventh.

The Latecomers continue to cling to eighth place with a one point lead over Fivesome for the last spot in the B division of the playoffs. Just five weeks remain in the regular season.

Taking six points in their matches were the Rolling Stones, Wedgers and CCCP. The Fat Shafts and Whizbangers grabbed five points while Grip It N Sip It took four points. The KGB took two while the Dubbers and Southpaws settled for a single point.

The closest to the pin winners tonight were Al Wilkinson  on hole 4 and Jamie Sandercock on hole 13. The 50/50 winner was Matt Knell.

We’re back to the white tees next Wednesday.

UPDATED: The standings have been adjusted and the story should be correct now after a scoring error was found on the sheet on Thursday.

Solid Rounds For Many

Ideal conditions both on the course and weather wise resulted in some much lower scores overall tonight.

Six teams posted sub 100 team totals. Peter Hughes and Andy Koetstra had the low individual rounds shooting one over par 28. Thirteen others shot 32 or better. Good shooting guys.

There was some movement in the standings as the Dubbers moved into fifth place, just four points behind the fourth place KGB. The Latecomers have a slim one point edge on the Fivesome for the potential last spot in the B division come the playoffs. Only six weeks remain in the regular season.

In the nights matches, the Southpaws, Rolling Stones, Fat Shafts and Dubbers all took six points. The Whizbangers earned five points while the Fivesome took four points. The Hackers doubled their season point total by taking two points while one point went to the Wedgers.

The closest to the pin winners were Colin McDonald on hole 3 and Kim Defosse on hole 12. The 50/50 winner was Peter Hughes.

See you next Wednesday on the blue tees.

Muggy End To May

In typical Ontario fashion, our temperatures have gone from chilly to sweltering quicker than I can donate a golf ball to the woods. The balmy conditions helped produce some better scores tonight as well as plenty of mosquitoes.

The Southpaws remain perfect on the season with the Fat Shafts two points behind in second. The middle of the pack is very tight with only seven points separating fourth from tenth place.

In the evenings matches the CCCP, Southpaws, Rolling Stones and Fat Shafts took six points each. The Latecomers and Dubbers grabbed four points while KGB and Grip It N Sip It took two points each.

The closest to the pin winners were Peter Hughes on hole #6 and Jamie Sandercock on hole #15. The 50/50 winner was Tyler Donaldson.

We’re on the blue tees next week. See you there.

The Dust Has Settled

With the completion of tonight’s round, another regular season has come to an end and our focus turns to the playoffs.

Before we break that down, here’s how this evenings rounds went. The CCCP, Southpaws and Whizbangers all took six points. Grip It N Sip It and Fat Shafts earned five points each. The KGB grabbed four points while single points went to the Dubbers and Fivesome.

The closest to the pin winners were Peter Hughes on hole #9 while Jamie Sandercock was tight on hole #18. The 50/50 winner was Mike Leslie.

The playoffs start on the blue tees next week at 6pm and you’ll get your starting holes that night.

Two teams, Grip It N Sip It and Rolling Stones, finished tied for fourth spot but I believe since Grip It N Sip It beat the Stones 7-5 in head to head play, they will get the last spot in the “A” flight. If anything changes on that or I’ve made an error I’ll make a correction.

Here are the playoff groupings as I understand it.

“A” Flight

  1. Fat Shafts
  2. Whizbangers
  3. Southpaws
  4. Grip It N Sip It

“B” Flight

  1. Rolling Stones
  2. Dubbers
  3. KGB
  4. Latecomers

“C” Flight

  1. Fivesome
  2. CCCP
  3. Wedgers
  4. Hackers

See you next week.

Playoffs Only Weeks Away

First off let me apologize for the league standings having to be added at the end of this weeks post. Something has changed with our site provider that has removed all functionality with the side column which no longer allows me to edit the standings there. If this isn't fixed soon I may have to create a new website using a different provider. Time will tell.

After this week, we only have two more weeks of regular season to go before the playoffs begin. It's my understanding, as it stands, that there will be four weeks of playoffs. The top four teams will make up the "A" flight. Teams five to eight will make up the "B" flight and teams nine to eleven will compete in the "C" flight. Details on how that will work will be made available soon.

Time is running out to make a move but there are still some teams who could make a push and move higher in the standings.

In action tonight, the Latecomers, Southpaws and Fat Shafts all earned six points. The Rolling Stones earned five points while four points each went to the KGB and Dubbers. The Fivesome and Wedgers each grabbed two points while the Hackers took a single point.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Peter Hughes on hole #9 and Shane McGill on hole #18. The 50/50 winner was Randy Grills.

Standings

1. Southpaws - 46 pts
2. Fat Shafts - 44 pts
3. KGB - 39 pts
4. Dubbers - 36 pts
4. Rolling Stones - 36 pts
6. Fivesome - 29 pts
7. Hackers - 28 pts
8. Latecomers - 20 pts
9. Whizbangers - 17 pts
10. CCCP - 15 pts
11. Wedgers - 14 pts

Hughes Leads Dubbers To Low Gross

The scores overall this season have been relatively high compared to past years but it was only a matter of time before teams and players started hitting their stride.

A handful of teams shot scores that beat the previous Team Low Gross but the Dubbers posted the lowest score by shooting a 90 to take over that lead. They were led by Peter Hughes who also set the new Individual Low Gross mark by shooting an even par round of 27. In total five players shot below 30.

In the nightly matches it was all sweeps as the Dubbers, Fat Shafts, Hackers, Southpaws, Rolling Stones and Fivesome all earned six points. The Southpaws have moved back into first place but only by two points.

The Closest to the Pin winners tonight were Peter Hughes on hole #5 and Mark Kennedy on hole #14. The 50/50 winner for the second time in three weeks was Matt Knell.

Fat Shafts Defend Regular Season Title

The final night of our shortened season proved to be the deciding night and when the dust settled, the Fat Shafts narrowly defended their regular season title.

Several teams had a chance to claim first place. The Fat Shafts and the second place Southpaws went head to head and both teams scored well with the Fat Shafts winning the gross for four points and the Southpaws took the net for two points. This meant the Dubbers had a chance to move into first if they could beat the KGB. Both teams played well but the KGB took all six points to play spoiler. The Rolling Stones were also in the mix and took six points to slip past the Dubbers into a tie for second place with the Southpaws.

Also taking six points tonight were the Whizbangers and the Fivesome.

Several players turned in solid rounds with Tim Donaldson shooting a 27, Andy Koetstra and Stephen Westlake both shot 28 and Al Wilkinson and Peter Hughes each shot rounds of 29. The Fat Shafts had the low team total of 89.

The 50/50 winner was Peter Hugues while the Closest to the Pin winners were Kevin Wadsworth on hole #9 and Paul Reid on hole #18.

The final regular season standings are listed on the right. Peter Hughes round last week of 26 earns him the Individual Low Gross award for the season. The Fat Shafts had the Team Low Gross this year with an 87.

The playoffs begin next Wednesday night and go for four weeks. The first two weeks will be on the Blue Tees with the last two week from the White Tees. There has been a slight change and the top six teams will compete against each other with the bottom four teams battling it out. As usual this is strictly gross score total based on your best three players each night. Tee times have yet to be set but as soon as they are Steve Powell will contact the team captains and I'll try to post them here as well.

See you next Wednesday and good luck in the playoffs.

Hughes Fires Low Gross

While the blue tees proved troublesome for many tonight, for Peter Hughes it wasn't much of a bother at all as he set the new Individual Low Gross mark to beat by shooting a round of one under par 26.

Only one week remains in the regular season and there's still several teams who have a chance to finish in the top spot. The Southpaws stumbled tonight losing all six points in their match with the Dubbers and have now slipped into a second place tie with them.

The Fat Shafts took six point in their match and the defending league and playoff champs have a slim one point lead at the top of the standings. The Rolling Stones also took six points and remain five points out of first place, however the Southpaws and Fat Shafts play each other next week so it will likely be either them or the Dubbers that will take the Covid19 shortened title.

In the other matches on the night, the Whizbangers and KGB also took all six points up for grabs. The Closest to the Pin winners were Ross Prophet on hole #8 and Kevin Wadsworth on hole #17. The 50/50 winner was Jim Conley.

As mentioned, next week is the final week of the regular season. The playoffs will start the following week with the top four teams playing each other in the "A" Division and the other six teams will battle in the "B" Division. It's my understanding that the first two weeks of playoffs will be from the Blue Tees and the last two weeks will be from the White Tees to ensure we have enough daylight. If I get any other details I'll post them here.

See you next week!

Bring On The Playoffs

It’s hard to believe but another regular season of golf has come to an end and we start playoffs next Wednesday night. As expected, the final night gave teams a chance to solidify their spots for the playoff groupings.

In tonight’s play, the Bogies and Fivesome leapfrogged the Southpaws and CCCP to ensure their place in the “B” Flight. Also joining them there are the Rolling Stones and Southpaws.

The CCCP stumbled and dropped back to ninth spot to land in the “C” Flight with the Latecomers, Hackers and Wedgers.

The “A” Flight was already decided. The Fat Shafts finished in first place with an 18 point cushion over the KGB. The Dubbers and Whizbangers round out the top four spots.

Tim Donaldson, Andy Koetstra, Stephen Westlake  and Paul Scobie share the seasons Individual Low Gross honours having all shot even par 27. The Team Low Gross for the year goes to the Fat Shafts with an 88.

The Closest to the Pin winners tonight were Peter Hughes on hole #8 and Taylor Rivando on hole #17. The 50/50 winner was Dave Powell.

Playoffs begin with the White tees the next two Wednesday’s and then on Saturday September 7th we’ll play the final 18 holes from the Blue tees followed by the wrap up party.

1. Fat Shafts
2. KGB
3. Dubbers
4. Whizbangers

Powell Joins Pack

It was another cool and overcast Wednesday evening but luckily the weather cooperated with just a few raindrops during the round.

The already crowded Individual Low Gross leader board now has a seventh name added to it as Jerry Powell shot a 29 to join the group at that score.
Coady MacGillivary takes aim at hole #8.
Andy Koetstra also shoot 29 but is already among the low scorers.

The Fat Shafts nearly tied the Team Low Gross leaders but only managed to shoot a 94 for the low score of the night. That was good enough to earn them six points to increase their lead in the standings slightly.

The other teams that swept all six points in their matches were the Fivesome, Bogies, KGB and Rolling Stones. The Whizbangers took four points while the Dubbers grabbed two points.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Peter Hughes on hole #5 and Jim Turner on hole #14. The 50/50 winner was Jordan Mercer.

Blue Tees Were Trouble

Playing the blue tees for the second time this season proved to be tough for many as scoring was high overall tonight.

Al Wilkinson and Tyler Donaldson posted the low scores for the round with each of them shooting 31.
Jim Turner sets his sights on hole #12.
The lowest team total of the night went to the Rolling Stones with a combined total of 102.

The Fat Shafts increased their lead slightly by taking six points from the KGB. Also sweeping all the points in their matches were the Dubbers, Whizbangers, Latecomers and Rolling Stones. The Fivesome grabbed four points while the Hackers took two.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Coady MacGillivary on hole #3 and Tim Donaldson on hole #12. The 50/50 winner was Peter Hughes.

How Sweep It Is

After a stumble last week, the KGB were able to take advantage of some help by the Southpaws to regain top spot in the league. However, the lead is a slim one with the lefties, Fat Shafts, Whizbangers and Rolling Stones all in the hunt.

It was feast or famine as we played from the blue tees this evening. All six matches were clean sweeps with the CCCP, Southpaws, KGB, Rolling Stones, Fat Shafts and Hackers taking all six points up for grabs.

The low team score was posted by the Fat Shaft with a 96. The low scores for the night were turned in by Andy Koetstra and Tim Donaldson who both shot 29. Andy also grabbed the closest to the pin on hole #15 while Carl Troke was most accurate on hole #6. The 50/50 winner was Kim Defosse.

KGB Finally Stumble

It took a while but the KGB finally faltered and the Whizbangers took full advantage to leapfrog them and move into first place in the league. The KGB hadn't lost a point going into tonight's round but the Fat Shafts changed that by taking four points in their match. The Whizbangers grabbed all six points and have now moved into first place by three points.

The heat actually didn't seem to bother too many as some lower rounds were posted. The Fat Shafts had the low team score of 93, one off the Team Low Gross lead. Three other teams also posted sub-100 rounds. The low individual score for the round was shot by Al Wilkinson with a 28. That was one shy of tying the Individual Low Gross score. Peter Hughes shot a score of 29.

The Dubbers were the only other team to take all six points. The Southpaws grabbed five points while the Fivesome and Rolling Stones each took four points. Two points each went to the KGB, Hackers and Bogies while a single point was earned by the Latecomers.

The closest to the pin winners were Eric Korver on hole #5 and Ryan Cuculuzzi on hole #14. The 50/50 winner was Tom St Denis.

It Was Worth The Wait

Tim Donaldson takes aim at hole #3.

I'm sure many of you were wondering if we'd ever get the season started but finally tonight after two missed weeks, the rain stayed away and we couldn't have asked for better weather.

The course was in terrific shape and the greens were quite speedy for the first week in May. I know it's only a matter of time but the bugs were rather tame as well.

After our usual gathering at the clubhouse to catch up after a long winter it was finally time to get things going. It was nearly clean sweeps in all of the matches as the Whizbangers, Southpaws, Dubbers, Fivesome and KGB all took six points.
Glen Lonergan fires at the green.
The Fat Shafts earned five points having to split the Net total with the Rolling Stones who finished with one point.

There were several impressive individual rounds with Tim Donaldson and Peter Hughes leading the way, each with a score of even par 27. Andy Koetstra posted a one over par round of 28. The KGB set the pace for the Team Low Gross by shooting a combined score of 92.

The closest to the pin winners were Tyler Donaldson on hole #1 and Peter Hughes on hole #10. Lyle Williams was the first 50/50 winner of the year.
