2018 Playoffs - Final Round

As the saying goes...that's all folks. Another season has come to an end and we couldn't have asked for a better day. The muggy hot weather gave way to more seasonal temperatures and some beautiful sunshine to finish off our year.

In the "A" Flight, the lead by the Rolling Stones heading into the last round proved to be too much for the rest of the teams to make a move and challenge them. Although the Fat Shafts did post the lowest round of the day, the could only pick up three strokes to finish 14 strokes behind the winners. The league champion KGB finished in third while the Southpaws came in fourth well back.

Over in the "B" Flight, the Dubbers held a two stroke advantage going into the final 18 holes but stumbled and the Whizbangers moved past them to earn the title by a final margin of 10 strokes. The Latecomers had a tough day and slipped out of contention early while the Wedgers finished in fourth.

The closest battle was in the "C" Flight. The Fivesome, who lead by 14 going into the day, barely held off the charging Bogies and won by only three strokes in the end. The CCCP finished in third place while the Hackers ended up in fourth.

Once again this year we give our thanks to Steve Powell for all he does not only on the final day but all season long to keep the league running smoothly. Thanks to Tom, Alida and Andy for their efforts both in keeping the course in great shape in tough conditions and for keeping things organized in the clubhouse. I also want to thank Alida for sending me the results each week so I can update the blog.

The season started slow with some cold icy cancelled rounds but overall we managed to have good luck most of the season with the weather. Unless of course you're not a fan of the heat because it was a scorcher most nights.

Thanks to all of you for checking out the blog for updates each week and for another fun season. I look forward to seeing everyone in the Spring and hope you have a safe Autumn and Winter.

For those of you who would like to keep the clubs out a bit longer, we keep playing on Wednesday nights with some fun scrambles as long as the daylight allows.

Final Playoff Standings

1. Rolling Stones - 373
2. Fat Shafts - 387
3. KGB - 399

2018 Playoffs - Round Two

Our final Wednesday night and second playoff round was another hot and humid affair. After a scorching summer it seemed appropriate that we’d have one more sweltering evening on the links. The good news is that our scheduled round on Saturday looks to be more seasonal and at this point…dry. Let’s hope that holds true.

The second round of play from the white tees saw a couple teams extend their leads. In the “A” Flight the Rolling Stones posted another solid round of 91. This gives them a comfortable lead over the second place Fat Shafts who moved ahead of the KGB by shooting a 97 and sit 17 strokes back. The KGB faltered and shot 106 while the Southpaws slipped further back in fourth with a 113.

The “B” Flight continues to be the tightest battle after 18 holes of play. The Dubbers moved into sole possession of first by two strokes after shooting a 107. The Whizbangers posted their second round of 105 for a total of 210. One stroke back of them is the Latecomers while the Wedgers have fallen off the pace with a 118 and find themselves 16 shots back.

The Fivesome have a commanding lead in the “C” Flight but as we saw last year in the “A” Flight, no lead is ever safe. The Fivesome have a 14 stroke lead over the second place Bogies who shot 114 tonight. The CCCP are 16 strokes back in third while the Hackers struggled and find themselves 34 strokes off the pace.

The final 18 holes from the blue tees will be played on Saturday September 8th beginning at 2:00pm with the meal, putting contests and party to follow.

Standings

"A" Flight
1. Rolling Stones - 87 - 91 - 178
2. Fat Shafts - 98 - 97 - 195

"B" Flight

2018 Playoffs - Round One

The conditions for the kick off of our playoffs felt more like July rather than late August.
Relaxing at the clubhouse prior to the round.
The hot, humid weather combined with a new batch of bloodsuckers added an extra challenge to the round.

In the "A" Flight the Rolling Stones came out with a big statement round to grab the early lead by shooting a round of 87. The KGB had a solid round of 94 while the Fat Shafts shot 98 and the Southpaws posted a 101.

Over in the "B" Flight it's a tight grouping after nine holes. The Latecomers and Dubbers set the early pace by both shooting 101. The Whizbangers are four shots back at 105 and the Wedgers posted a 106.

The "C" Flight isn't as tight but is still anyone's to win. The Fivesome set the early lead by shooting a 100 with the Bogies four strokes behind with a 104. The Hackers sit in third with 111 and the CCCP put up a 118.

Round two from the white tees will be played on Wednesday with the final 18 holes from the blue tees on Saturday September 8th beginning at 2:00pm.

Standings

"A" Flight
1. Rolling Stones - 87
2. KGB - 94
3. Fat Shafts - 98
4. Southpaws - 101

2. Bogies - 104
3. Hackers - 111
4. CCCP - 118

Dean Ends Season Hot

Marty McDonald tees off on the ninth hole.
It was the last night of regular season and the last opportunity to grab the individual low gross prize for the season and Rick Dean did just that with a bang. He broke the three-way tie at even par 27 by shooting an impressive two-under par 25 to earn the honour by himself. His score along with a 30 by Kevin Wadsworth and a 33 by Jim Turner improved on the KGB's Team Low Gross crown with an 88.

The KGB, Wedgers and Southpaws all took six points tonight. Five points each went to the Latecomers and Fivesome. The Fat Shafts took four points from the Dubbers who settled for two points. Single points went to the Rolling Stones and CCCP.

The playoff pools are now all set. The "A" Flight was already decided with the KGB, Southpaws, Rolling Stones and Fat Shafts battling each other. The "B" Flight saw the teams solidify their positions with the Whizbangers, Dubbers, Latecomers and Wedgers set to meet. The "C" Flight will see the Fivesome, Bogies, Hackers and CCCP fight it out.

The playoffs will take place the next two Wednesdays from the White Tees and then the final 18 holes from the Blue Tees on Saturday September 8th beginning at 2:00 p.m.

The closest to the pin winners this evening were Kyle Wilkinson on hole #7 and Tim Donaldson on hole 16. The 50/50 winner was Carl Snutch.

Wednesday 15 August 2018

KGB Clinch League

With only one week of regular season play remaining, the KGB assured themselves a league title with their outing tonight. With a ten point lead they're can't be caught.

The Rolling Stones and Southpaws will also be in the "A" Flight in the playoffs. Despite the Whizbangers being completely absent for their match this evening they still have a chance to tie the Fat Shaft for the fourth spot, however I'm unaware of what the tie-breaker would be.

The final positions for both the "B" and "C" flights are also still up for grabs for a few teams and the final week will decide where the Wedgers, Bogies, Latecomers and Fivesome will finish.

In this evenings matches, Rolling Stones, Dubbers and Wedgers took six points while five points went to the Fivesome. The Southpaws and KGB each earned four points while two points each went to Latecomers and Fat Shafts. A single point was all the Hackers could grab.

The lowest round of the night was turned in by Kyle Wilkinson with a one over par 28. The closest to the pin winners were Tom St.Denis on hole #6 and Jordan Mercer on hole #15. The 50/50 winner was Jim Lidster.

Congratulations goes out to two league members who won the Club Championship on the weekend. Tim Donaldson won the Men's Division while Stephen Westlake won the Senior Men's Division. Many other league members had impressive rounds on the weekend as well.

KGB Set New Low Gross

The torrential rain in the afternoon that struck the area moved out in time for us to play golf tonight and that was perfect for the high flying KGB. They turned in an impressive round of 89 to take over the Team Low Gross lead.

The KGB have almost clinched first overall as well. With an 11 point lead over the second place Southpaws, they only need two more points in the final couple of weeks to seal the deal. The Whizbangers took advantage of another stumble by the Fat Shafts and are now only four points out of a top four position.

In tonight's matches the KGB and Whizbangers were the only teams to earn six points. The Wedgers, Latecomers and Rolling Stones earned five points each while the Southpaws took four points. The Hackers grabbed two points while a single point each went to the Bogies, Fat Shafts and Fivesome.

The closest to the pin winners were Justin Timson on hole #5 and Al Wilkinson on hole #14. The 50/50 winner was Don Muldoon.

Wednesday 1 August 2018

The End Is Nearing

With only three weeks of regular season play remaining, the time left to set up your playoff position is quickly vanishing.

The KGB have a nine point lead on the Southpaws which seems insurmountable considering how consistent they've played this season but anything can happen. The Whizbangers gained a little ground on the fourth place Fat Shafts and there is a possibility they could slip into that final spot in the "A" flight should the Shafts continue to falter. There is also much to be decided further down in "B" and "C" Flights with several teams are in the mix.

On this night there were just three perfect teams as the Rolling Stones, Southpaws and Whizbangers all took six points. The CCCP, Fat Shafts and KGB took four points each while two points went to the Latecomers, Bogies and Wedgers.

The low round of the evening was shot by Andy Koetstra with a two-over 29. The closest to the pin winners were Rick Dean on hole #4 and Stephen Westlake on hole #13. Tony Schick was the 50/50 winner this week.

Wednesday 25 July 2018

Southpaws Tie Low Gross

The Fat Shafts have some company at the Team Low Gross lead after the Southpaws shot 91 against them for six points and also moved past the free-falling Shafts to sit in second place behind the KGB. The Rolling Stones were handed six easy points when the CCCP failed to field a team and now sit tied for third place.

The Whizbangers and KGB also took six points tonight while the Wedgers and Dubbers each grabbed four points. Two points each went to the Latecomers and Fivesome.

Benny Brock's luck continues as he was once again picked as the 50/50 winner. The low rounds of the evening were shot by Tim Donaldson and Andy Koetstra with scores of 28.

The closest to the pin winners were Denis Schick on hole #3 and Eric Korver on hole #12. Special thanks to Rick Dean who bought a round for everyone after his ace last week.

Wednesday 18 July 2018

Dean Sinks Hole-in-One

The hole-in-one pot will be starting fresh next week after Rick Dean's tee shot on hole #2 this evening found the bottom of the cup.
Rick Dean is all smiles after sinking a hole-in-one tonight.
His choice of holes couldn't have been better as it also turned out to be the closest to the pin hole on the front nine this evening. Kyle Wilkinson was closest on the back nine with his tee shot going just a bit long on hole #11.

On what was the coolest evening we've had in some time we might have expected the scores to be pretty good overall but that wasn't the case as the majority of the rounds tonight were a tad high. Kyle Wilkinson shot a 28 for the lowest round of the night but not one team was able to score under 100.

Four teams swept their matches as the Dubbers, Rolling Stones, Whizbangers and Southpaws all took six points. The KGB grabbed five points while the Wedgers moved out of last place by taking four points. The Fivesome earned two points and a single point went to the CCCP. Dave Reid was this weeks 50/50 winner.

Wednesday 11 July 2018

Changes on the Leaderboard

With only seven weeks of regular season play remaining in the league, time is starting to grow short to jockey for your playoff positions.
Steve Guindon take aim at the 4th hole.
The top four teams are starting to pull away from the rest of the pack however a lot can change in a short time.

Tonight the conditions were much more comfortable following last weeks round in the sauna and the Fat Shafts took advantage to shoot a total of 91 to take over the Team Low Gross. Paul Reid also joined Tim Donaldson and Peter Hughes for a share of the Individual Low Gross lead after posting a round of 27.

The Fat Shafts, KGB, Southpaws and Dubbers all took six points. Grabbing four points each were the Latecomers and Hackers while the Bogies and Rolling Stones each earned two points.

The closest to the pin winners were Paul Reid on hole #1 and Juddy Timson on hole #10. The 50/50 winner for the second time in three weeks was Benny Brock.

Wednesday 4 July 2018

Swing & Sweat

With temperatures in the 30's and feeling like the 40's with the humidity, I think we can all cut ourselves a break if we didn't golf as well as usual. The sweltering heat and still air made playing a bit tougher and the scores for the night proved that.

The low round turned in by several golfers was 32 which is a tad higher than normal. I know by the end of my round, gripping the club was proving difficult at times but we made it. Hopefully by next week the temps drop a few degrees.

Four teams managed to sweep all their matches as the KGB, Hackers, Fat Shafts and Rolling Stones each took six points. The Dubbers and Southpaws earned four points each while the Bogies and Wedgers took two points each.

The closest to the pin winners were Don St.Denis on hole #9 and Kyle Wilkinson on hole #18. The 50/50 winner this week was Eric Korver.

Wednesday 27 June 2018

Fat Shafts Tie Low Gross

The way things have been going this season we were prepared for the possibility of another rain out but luckily the wet weather passed us by and allowed us to get our round in this evening.

After coming close a few times, the Fat Shafts were able to finally tie the KGB for the Team Low Gross lead. Andy Koetstra shot 28, Stephen Westlake posted a 29 and Mark Kennedy shot 35 to combine for a 92. Paul Scobie also shot a one-over 28 to tie for the low round of the night. A total of five teams managed to post sub-100 team scores.

It was another feast or famine night in the matches as the Bogies, Fivesome, Latecomers, KGB, Fat Shafts and Southpaws all took six points. The closest to the pin winners were Denis Schick on hole #8 and Marty MacDonald on hole #17. The 50/50 winner was Benny Brock.

Wednesday 20 June 2018

Feeling The Blues

On the final night of Spring we were treated to some ideal golf conditions following last weeks cancelled round.
Don Muldoon says thanks! Well done.
There was no rain, lightning or strong winds but the blue tees proved to be a challenge all on their own for many.

Only two teams managed to post a total under 100 with Al Wilkinson and Andy Koetstra shooting 29 for the low scores of the evening.

Sweeping all six points in their matches were the Rolling Stones, Wedgers, Fat Shafts and Bogies. The KGB took five points while the Dubbers earned four points. The Latecomers grabbed two points and the Whizbangers took a single point on the night.

The closest to the pin winners were Andy Koetstra on hole #7 and Ralph Lambert on hole #16. The 50/50 winner was Paul Reid.

Beautiful But Cancelled

Heading to the golf course tonight I wondered if I should have used a boat instead of my car as the torrential rain and lightning moved in as expected.

And also as expected it was gone as quickly as it came and by 6pm we were ready to golf on a beautiful evening.
The only problem was not enough league members showed up to play the round as the weather scared them off.

Those that did show up either went home or stuck around to play in a fun best ball scramble. The winning team at 4-under-par consisted of Denis Schick, Tom St.Denis, Mark Kennedy, Lyle Williams and Benny Brock.

See you next week.

Wednesday 6 June 2018

How Sweep It Is

After a stumble last week, the KGB were able to take advantage of some help by the Southpaws to regain top spot in the league. However, the lead is a slim one with the lefties, Fat Shafts, Whizbangers and Rolling Stones all in the hunt.

It was feast or famine as we played from the blue tees this evening. All six matches were clean sweeps with the CCCP, Southpaws, KGB, Rolling Stones, Fat Shafts and Hackers taking all six points up for grabs.

The low team score was posted by the Fat Shaft with a 96. The low scores for the night were turned in by Andy Koetstra and Tim Donaldson who both shot 29. Andy also grabbed the closest to the pin on hole #15 while Carl Troke was most accurate on hole #6. The 50/50 winner was Kim Defosse.

Wednesday 30 May 2018

KGB Finally Stumble

It took a while but the KGB finally faltered and the Whizbangers took full advantage to leapfrog them and move into first place in the league. The KGB hadn't lost a point going into tonight's round but the Fat Shafts changed that by taking four points in their match. The Whizbangers grabbed all six points and have now moved into first place by three points.

The heat actually didn't seem to bother too many as some lower rounds were posted. The Fat Shafts had the low team score of 93, one off the Team Low Gross lead. Three other teams also posted sub-100 rounds. The low individual score for the round was shot by Al Wilkinson with a 28. That was one shy of tying the Individual Low Gross score. Peter Hughes shot a score of 29.

The Dubbers were the only other team to take all six points. The Southpaws grabbed five points while the Fivesome and Rolling Stones each took four points. Two points each went to the KGB, Hackers and Bogies while a single point was earned by the Latecomers.

The closest to the pin winners were Eric Korver on hole #5 and Ryan Cuculuzzi on hole #14. The 50/50 winner was Tom St Denis.

Wednesday 23 May 2018

Feel The Heat

It's amazing how the weather can turn so quickly. It doesn't seem that long ago the league was delayed starting due to ice and snow and then here tonight it almost felt like a mid summer round in the hot sun. I think we'll take more nights like this.

The ideal conditions didn't translate into overly impressive games as the long blue tees and some tricky pin placements gave us a real challenge.

Three teams managed to sweep their matches. The KGB, Whizbangers and Bogies all took six points while the Rolling Stones earned five points tonight. The Fat Shafts and Southpaws both grabbed four points while the Latecomers and Hackers took two points each. A single point was awarded to the Fivesome.

The closest to the pin winners this evening were Marty MacDonald on hole #4 and Mark Kennedy on hole #13. The 50/50 winner was Kory Hietala.

Wednesday 16 May 2018

KGB Still Perfect

I don't want to jinx us but after the wet start to the season we've been fortunate the last three weeks to have ideal golfing conditions. Overall the scores were slightly better tonight but teams continue to struggle despite the amazing conditions of the course to start the year.

The KGB remain the only team that hasn't given up a single point after week three as they swept their match against the Wedgers to earn another six points.
Glenn Lonergan tees off on hole #4.
The Whizbangers, Rolling Stones and Southpaws also took six points. The Fat Shafts and CCCP each earned four points while the Bogies and Latecomers settled for two points.

The low round of the night was posted by Kyle Wilkinson with a 31. The closest to the pin winners were Jim Turner on hole #3 and Kyle Wilkinson on hole #12. The 50/50 winner was Eric Mofina.

Have a safe and enjoyable Victoria Day long weekend.

Wednesday 9 May 2018

Blues A Challenge

Despite an absolutely perfect evening for golf, the challenge of playing from the blue tees proved to be troublesome for most teams tonight. In fact, not one team was able to post a sub-100 score. The KGB and Fat Shafts had the Low round of 103.

Al Wilkinson had the lowest score of the night as he shot a four over par 31. Wilkinson also managed to win the closest to the pin prize on hole #2.
Paul Scobie takes aim at the sixteenth hole.
Paul Scobie grabbed the prize on the back nine hitting the green on hole #11. The 50/50 winner was Pat Conley.

The points were spread around a bit more tonight. The KGB and Fat Shafts were the only teams to take all six points. Earning five points each were the Rolling Stones and Whizbangers. The Dubbers and Latecomers took four points each while the Fivesome and Wedgers grabbed two points. Earning single points were the CCCP and Bogies.

It's back to the white tees next week and just a reminder, if you didn't pick up a schedule in the clubhouse tonight you can always see it by clicking the link to the right.

It Was Worth The Wait

Tim Donaldson takes aim at hole #3.

I'm sure many of you were wondering if we'd ever get the season started but finally tonight after two missed weeks, the rain stayed away and we couldn't have asked for better weather.

The course was in terrific shape and the greens were quite speedy for the first week in May. I know it's only a matter of time but the bugs were rather tame as well.

After our usual gathering at the clubhouse to catch up after a long winter it was finally time to get things going. It was nearly clean sweeps in all of the matches as the Whizbangers, Southpaws, Dubbers, Fivesome and KGB all took six points.
Glen Lonergan fires at the green.
The Fat Shafts earned five points having to split the Net total with the Rolling Stones who finished with one point.

There were several impressive individual rounds with Tim Donaldson and Peter Hughes leading the way, each with a score of even par 27. Andy Koetstra posted a one over par round of 28. The KGB set the pace for the Team Low Gross by shooting a combined score of 92.

The closest to the pin winners were Tyler Donaldson on hole #1 and Peter Hughes on hole #10. Lyle Williams was the first 50/50 winner of the year.

League Twitter Account

I know many of you are on Twitter and might be interested in this.

I've created a League Twitter account. I'm sure it won't be used a lot to start but I thought for those on the run who can't access the league blog site, this might be a quicker and easier way to get out news, cancellations and other info out to you when I don't have time to post to the blog.

With a Twitter account I can give quick updates from anywhere.

To follow the league Twitter account go to https://twitter.com/mhwnml on your computer or go on Twitter and search for the username @mhwnml and click on follow.

Week Two Cancelled

I swear we're going to get this season started at some point but sadly it won't begin in April.

The rain today has forced us to cancel week number two of league play and postponed the start of the season once again.

April showers bring May flowers but right now I think we'd all settle for some sunshine and dry conditions.

The golf course is open so if we do get some nice days between now and next Wednesday night you can at least get out and try to shake the rust off before we hopefully begin on on May 2nd starting with the third week on the schedule.

See you then guys!

Saturday 21 April 2018

While We Wait

I don't want to jinx anything but I think we're finally going to start seeing some actual signs of Spring. The snow and ice is melting and the sun is actually starting to produce something that resembles warmth.

With any luck, and barring more inclement weather we will hopefully get the league started this coming Wednesday.

In the meantime, here's a little inspiration to help you get into the right frame of mine once we hit the links.

Tuesday 17 April 2018

Hold That Thought

Remember when we could see the grass?
I don't think anyone will be surprised to learn that the start of league play will be delayed by a week.

Following the ice storm and recent snowfall over the weekend, the course is unplayable until such time as the conditions warm up and the latest blanket of white stuff melts.

This week's scheduled matches will not be made up. Instead, the league will hopefully pick up on Week Two beginning on April 25th.

Lets hope we see some sunshine and heat over the next week. See you soon.

Schedule Released

This year's league schedule is out.

In the column to the right you'll see a link to the schedule. Just click on the link and you'll be able to see who you are playing each week.

Tuesday 10 April 2018

Are You Ready?

I just got the word from the golf course.

Weather permitting, the league will start play on Wednesday April 18th. Keep your fingers crossed that we finally get some warmer and dryer conditions.

To the best of my knowledge, league dues are still $30 each.

See you all there.

Ian MacDonald Passes Away

Ian tees off on the fourth hole.
It is with extreme shock and much sadness that I have to share the news with all of you that we've lost another member of our Wednesday night Family.

Ian MacDonald passed away this morning after a brief illness at the age of 44.

We will miss Ian's love for the game, his kindness and gentle demeanour. He was truly one of the nicest guys to play a round with and to share a laugh. He will be dearly missed.

Our most sincere condolences go out to Ian's wife Tanya, children Madison and Nathan and all of his family and friends.

New Season Approaches

Hello to all of our members and thanks for finding the new Wednesday Night League website.

The reason I created a new and very similar site is because the previous sight was connected to my personal accounts. I wanted to make a separate account and site just in case for some unforeseen reason I was not able to continue to be a member or to run the website, I could easily transfer it over to someone else to run should there be an interest to keep it going.

So I hope everyone who has enjoyed the previous site and updates will continue to enjoy this one which will be nearly identical to the old site. I've made a few changes to the overall look of the site and I hope it meets with your approval.

Having said all of that, we now find ourselves approaching mid-March which means another season of golf will be here before too long.

I have yet to receive any notification about a possible start date but as soon as I hear anything I will be sure to post the details here.

In the meantime, I hope everyone has had a safe winter and I look forward to seeing you out on the course sooner rather than later.
